If the New York Times starts running more stories like this one on stretching Saddam’s neck, I’ll have to seriously consider reassessing my opinion of that treacherous rag. Don’t worry. I’m sure their next big al-Qaeda assist is already in the pipeline.

But props where they’re due. This fine article on the various technical issues surrounding the hanging of Saddam Hussein and the eagerness of Iraqis to participate doesn’t include a single quote from some human rights idiot about how inhumane it is to dispense justice to a sadistic, genocidal mass murderer. It notes the objections as an aside, staying very much on-topic: the dangling of Saddam. I can only assume some hapless NYT editor is going to get a talking-to about this.

Great details about a botched hanging, the condemned man’s exultant cries of “God saved me!” and the hourlong theological debate among the executioners whether in fact this was divine intervention. They eventually decided Allah helps those who help themselves and strung him up again. Turns out Allah thought better of it. Previously reported in Time.

In other Saddam news: Saddam’s bomb-making nephew escapes. This news is not as bad as it would appear. It means the U.S. and Iraqi military get another crack at killing him when they find out where he is holed up.
