England may be close to confirming its first Neanderthal remains, from a cave in Torquay, Devon. Commentary and links at John Hawks’ superlative anthroblog.
If the jaw proves to be Neanderthal, then Kents Cavern will not only be the only place in Britain where there is direct evidence that Neanderthals once lived, but also it would confirm that Neanderthals spread across Europe and reached Britain far earlier than is currently thought.
What were our low-brow pals doing in Torquay 40,000 years ago? Probably hanging out sur la plage like everyone else at the English Riviera. After all, that cave was and is prime real estate (scroll down at “sur la plage” link for a peek in the cave).
If this Neanderthal find is confirmed, it comes nearly a century after an earlier British missing link claim went horribly wrong. Meet Piltdown Man.
