One-Eyed Mullah in the Land of the Blind?
The great thing about captured Taliban spokesman Mohammad Hanif claiming that Mullah Omar is in Quetta, Pakistan, under the protection of Pakistan’s ISI, is that it is entirely believeable. And yet, Hanif in his phone calls to the Associated Press was often a bald-faced liar. It’s his job. He is, after all, a propagandist. So he could be covering for Omar and trying to make trouble for the ISI, drive the wedge between the US and Pakistan a little deeper. Or not. Karzai has also said recently he thinks the one-eyed mullah is there. We already know from the Times of London that kohl-eyed, robe-wearing Taliban WIAs were hanging out openly in Quetta, but the Paks were blind to this. They have repeatedly denied that Quetta is a Taliban refuge and R&R destination, but have also staged periodic raids around town and in the hospital, arresting dozens of Taliban suspects, possibly as part of Pakistan’s ongoing campaign to make us think they are on our side, when in fact, significant elements of their security apparatus are not.

Pakistan might be “problematic” as an ally but they’re hugely less so than the Soviets were back in those days and both of them are much less problematic than the french ever were.
