Where Would Jesus Shop?

Jerusalem’s swank main drag, Herodian era, located.  That of course would be the time of Jesus, up to that nasty business in 70 A.D. when stylish promenading came to a screeching halt, as described in Josephus and mentioned in this report:

Archaeological excavations being carried out in Ir David, near the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, have uncovered what is said to be one of the most impressive finds in the site: a magnificent terraced street from the Herodian era, which served pilgrims and extended 600 meters from the Shiloah (Siloam) Pool to the Temple.

The store fronts and the splendid appearance of the remains have led researchers to conclude it was Jerusalem’s main street in the Second Temple era.

Drainage canals were exposed under the street. The excavators think these are the canals mentioned by contemporary historian Josephus Flavius, who said the Romans trapped the Jews who hid under the streets. The canals contained some cooking pots and remains of food, which may have served the Jews who hid out there in their final days.

If you’ve never been to Jerusalem, make it the next thing you do.  Plenty safe, totally mind-blowing.  Two must reads before going. (A) the Bible. (B) Josephus.  This brilliant and opportunistic traitor’s buckets-of-blood 1st century tabloid account of the seige and sacking of Jerusalem comes alive as you wander the streets and arrive at the last bit the Romans didn’t knock down. The ancient stones of the Western Wall.

And don’t forget.  Jerusalem is another one of the reasons they hate us.

But I thought the Musselmen said that the Jews really had no history in Jerusalem.

How exciting. I wonder about the excavations no one is allowed to make because of the political situation. One can only hope that they don’t manage to destroy everything in their haste to rewrite history to suit.
