Hillary for Democratic Candidate 2008!
I’m enthusiastic about Hillary’s run, and here are a couple more reasons why:
Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday that President Bush should withdraw all U.S. troops from Iraq before he leaves office, asserting it would be “the height of irresponsibility” to pass the war along to the next commander in chief.
“This was his decision to go to war with an ill-conceived plan and an incompetently executed strategy,” the Democratic senator from New York said her in initial presidential campaign swing through Iowa.
“We expect him to extricate our country from this before he leaves office” in January 2009, the former first lady said.
Let’s try a wayback rewrite:
Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday her husband, President Bill Clinton, should not be content with lobbing a couple of missiles, but should invade Afghanistan and attack al-Qaeda relentlessly to remove this dire threat to the United States that Richard Clarke keeps talking about. The twofer co-president asserted it would be “the height of irresponsibility” to pass this threat along to the next commander in chief.
“While my husband was distracted by … other matters … he has ignored the vital national security interests of our nation, and is trying to make it look good with an ill-conceived plan and an incompetently executed strategy,” the future Democratic senator from New York said.
“We expect him to extricate our country from this before he leaves office” in January 2001, the first lady said. She added, “Instead, he has only emboldened terrorists and their host nations with his hasty withdrawal from Somalia, and his ineffective, flailing attacks. He should also invade Iraq and remove this dire threat to a critical region’s security. He wants to, and knows he should, but lacks the stones. It’s the governing by poll thing.”
OK, back to 2007. Another funny part, in case you missed it:
One questioner asked Clinton if her track record showed she could stand up to “evil men” around the world.
“The question is, we face a lot of dangers in the world and, in the gentleman’s words, we face a lot of evil men and what in my background equips me to deal with evil and bad men,” Clinton said. She paused to gaze while the audience interrupted with about 30 seconds of laughter and applause.
Meeting later with reporters, she was pressed repeatedly to explain what she meant. She insisted it was a simple joke.
“I thought I was funny,” Clinton said. “You guys keep telling me to lighten up, be funny. I get a little funny and now I’m being psychoanalyzed.”
While we’re reviewing history and engaging in whatifs, take a minute to drop by Castle Argghhh!!! and check John’s deconstruction of Prof David Bell’s LA Times op-ed, “Was 9-11 Really That Bad?” Bell asserts that history tells us we’re overreacting. Good John of Argghhh!!! begs to differ.
Yuks and Disgust re Hillary and Bell:
Blue Crab on Bell: “Hell, it was only 3,000 or so Americans. No big deal. Nothing to see, move along.”
Dan Riehl on Bell: “I heard it kinda sucked if you were on a high floor at the WTC that day.”
Dan Riehl on Hill: “How can someone think they deserve to be President if they’re going to resent inheriting a tough job?” Another Riehlality check on Hill here: “She did manage to put the slick back in Clinton in a way I didn’t think she could.”
Dr Sanity on Denial: “The essence of psychological denial is a refusal to look at or acknowledge reality. Fortunately, reality exists outside of one’s head and is objective and verifiable. It is not altered by whim, desire, lies or myth.” Sanity includes the Top Ten Myths about 9/11, in case you had tourble getting to Strategy Page.
Don Surber to Hillary: “Dump Him.” As entertaining as those divorce proceedings would be, I have to differ. I like her better with him.
The Democratic Daily counsels an approach Hill can get behind. Governing by poll. Pam advises Hillary to follow Kerry’s lead, because it worked so well for him. As if Hillary can’t just turn to Bill for instructions on how to stick one’s finger to the wind. Firedoglake snerks approvingly.

That LA Times piece was the subject of a thread over at FR this weekend. In my opinion this response answered Prof. Bell admirably.

I would ask Mr. Bell how many deaths it takes to be “that bad”. I’d also like to know, if the building housing the LA Times was hit by an airplane, and Mr. Bell happened to be on the top floor, would he be telling himself, “This isn’t that bad”?

An experiment in progress. Some of these are Bill’s Bites posts, some of them are things I excerpted and linked but I’m sending you to the original post. If this works out I’ll start doing it every day. I may
