Overheard at the Bazaar
Iraq the Model says Iraqi media is reporting the big push comes Feb. 5, and Shiite militia and Sunni insurgent murderers, as previously reported, are clearing out of town. Surge doubters, take note.
ITM also reports that an Iranian opposition, delighted that Bush has authorized the killing of Iranian agents in Iraq, has helpfully published a list of their names. Read ITM’s whole post.
It is not news that they are bolting in advance of the crackdown. But any good hammer requires an anvil, and 1st Cav operations reported in Diyala last week, along with more recent reports of a purge of Sunni insurgent-linked Iraqi cops there, hopefully are an indication that the U.S. military and the Iraqi security forces are on that.
It remains to be seen whether one of the primary problems in Iraq, Moqtada al-Sadr and the Mahdi Army, will get a pass. They have been attempted to act normal, but this murderous Iranian proxy needs to be taken down aggressively not only for the sake of pace and stability in Iraq, but to begin the process of containing Iran as a regional threat.
