GOP to Dems: Sit Down, Shut Up
Care to guess where the NYT falls on this issue?
WASHINGTON, Feb. 5 — Republicans on Monday blocked Senate debate on a bipartisan resolution opposing President Bush’s troop buildup in Iraq, leaving in doubt whether the Senate would render a judgment on what lawmakers of both parties described as the paramount issue of the day.
Might just be me, but I’m pretty sure I’m picking up a point of view and maybe a wagging finger in that.
Curiously, the NYT buries the fact that Sen. John Warner voted to block debate on his own resolution:
The Republicans run a risk with their resistance in the event Democrats are able to persuade the public that Mr. Bush’s allies are stonewalling in the Senate and shielding the president from criticism over an unpopular war. But their show of unity, with war critics including Mr. Warner of Virginia and Senator Chuck Hagel, Republican of Nebraska, siding with the leadership, lent some credibility to Republican claims that Democrats were being unfair. “I am confident that somehow this matter will be worked out,” Mr. Warner said.
The New York Times, the Democratic Party and others in this great nation have been of the opinion that war or no, its politics as usual. After all, its not like its a real war. Therefore, undermining a wartime president on a key point of strategy, no big deal. Fortunately, some of the Republicans who had wandered off the ranch may be coming to their senses. For the moment.

Undermining a president? They have been doing that since he became President…these are the same folks who stood in the Well and declared He’s not my President while the Electoral College was voting!
The sorry state of affairs here is that the very same folks who have been WITHOUT A PRESIDENT for several years..ALSO SPEND THEIR TIME RANTING ABOUT LOSS OF FREEDOM AND AT THE SAME TIME REFUSE TO DEFEND FREEDOMS THEY ARE SO CONCERNED ABOUT. These folks would deny AND defy any other Citizen who DOESN’T AGREE WITH THEM..AND CRY THEY ARE BEING CALLED UNPATRIOTIC..IT IS ONLY PATRIOTIC WHEN THEY HEAR WHAT THEY LIKE..THE REST OF THE TIME WE ARE CALLED “EXTREMISTS, IDIOTS, IGNORANT AND WORSE”..OUR MILITARY IS CALLED NAZI STORM TROOPERS AND MERCENARIES…by these same Whiners..WHILE THEY COMPLAIN ABOUT DEFICITS AND HOW MUCH THEY WANT TO HAVE NATIONAL HEALTH..THEY LEAVE OUT ONE THING…WE ARE IN A DEFICIT SITUATION BECAUSE WE ARE AT WAR..IF THEY DO NOT LIKE THE DEFICIT AND WANT TO ERASE IT..WE TAXPAYERS ALL KNOW ONLY TO WELL THAT THESE SAME “LEADERS” WOULD LOVE TO RAISE TAXES AND TAKE THE DEFICIT WAR ON TERROR FUNDS..HAND THEM OUT AND TAKE SOME MORE FROM MY POCKETS AS WELL.. Note to these foks..WE ARE REALLY NOT SO DUMB that we would allow any of you to INCREASE THE DEFICIT..TO LEAVE US UNPROTECTED AND WITH HEALTH CARE FOR ALL..HEALTH CARE FOR ALL IS ONLY GOOD IF YOU ARE HEALTHY AND ALIVE…being blown up in your office means you don’t NEED ALL THOSE FANCY BENEFITS! AND THEY FORGET..IF WE ARE NOT ALIVE AND WELL..WE WON’T BE PAYING ALL THOSE TAXES..SAME THING IS HAPPENING IN OLD EUROPE TODAY…and MANY, MANY OF THE THINGS THEY.SUPPORT WILL BE BANNED UNDER A NEW “REGIME” SHOULD WE LOSE THE WAR ON TERROR…AND FIND OURSELVES PART OF THE “NEW” CALIPHATE!

I certainly hope that some are coming to their senses. It remains to be seen, however. I want results, not congressional bloviating.

Lord knows the last election was a ringing endorsement of the administration’s handling of Iraq.
What are the crazy Dems thinking?
All of 9% of Americans are behind the “Surge to Failure.”
Real Americans all.

Sorry, Alphie, but I missed the page in the Constitution that requires we run policy and wars by the polls. Maybe you can point me there.

The NYT has a problem with senate Parliamentary procedure. Whodathinkit.

Seems like only yesterday Republican Senators were trying to remove the ability of the minority party to filibuster.
Something about thwarting the will of the people or some such…
February 6th, 2007 at 3:45 pm
alphie:
Well that was just in regards to judicial nominees where filibusters were not geneerally used anyway.
This does not cut off debate, they can debate to their hearts content, it just says that if they want to get past a certain threshold they need a certain number of votes.
Besides, the majority of the people who helped the Democrats win that election were not like Pelosi et al. I know the Blue Dog Democrat who won in the 8th District in Indiana, is a pro life, pro gun, pro military anti amnesty conservative Democrat. I told the locals that a vote for him was a vote for Pelosi, but they decided to take him at his word. So I guess it remains to be seen if polls are as important as you think.
BTW, only 15% of the American people support cut and run from Iraq, they may not be happy with the war but they ain’t you. They are not slobbering all over themselves for defeat.

Pardon me, Alphie, old top, but you’re talking through the back of your neck. Headlines notwithstanding (consider the source, after all), it is not the Republicans who are trying to “shut down debate”. They have filibustered because the Democrats were trying to force cloture, i.e., were attempting to close down debate on alternative resolutions to the two that were being considered. The Democrats were, in effect, saying, “Here are the only two resolutions we’re going to discuss, choose regular or decaf.”

Sounds like a handy rationalization, Paco.
When my guys do it, it’s okay.
When the other guys do it…oh, my!
February 6th, 2007 at 4:47 pm
Alphie:
A little more focus, old fellow. The point is, IT IS NOT THE REPUBLICANS WHO ARE TRYING TO SHUT DOWN THE DEBATE. IT IS THE DEMOCRATS WHO ARE TRYING TO SHUT DOWN THE DEBATE BY FORCING CLOTURE ON TWO RESOLUTIONS WHICH DO NOT FAIRLY REPRESENT ALL REASONABLE ALTERNATIVES.

Filibustering is filibustering, Paco.
Everyone thinks their cause is just.
February 6th, 2007 at 6:59 pm
alphie:
Actually alphie, it sounds like the Democrats are a bunch of whiney ass crybabies who can dish it out but can’t take it. All this for a nonbinding resolution because so far at least they do not have the guts to really do the deed and cut off the money.
One would think that if that was really such a popular position that they would be eager to pull the rug out now wouldn’t one?

Yea, the dems have been so “responsible” in their use of filibuster in the past…for blocking things like 60’s civil rights legislation.

The government is supposed to be the slave to the people. That is the basis on which this country was founded. So unless the people are advocating the destruction of American Liberty, then the government is supposed to OBEY. In this case the people have spoken loudly, “End the war in Iraq. Bring the soldiers home.” If the government were legitimate it would bow to the will of the people. However, the Bush administration, as have most of the US administrations, believes that it is above the law..and above the will of the people. A government which will not voluntarily bow to it’s master NEEDS to be taught a lesson on who is the master and who the slave.

‘In this case the people have spoken loudly, “End the war in Iraq. Bring the soldiers home.” ‘
No, they haven’t. Maybe you missed it, but Joe Lieberman defeated so-called “anti-war” candidate Ned “Anyone Remember Me Now?” Lamont in one of the bluest of blue states. Hardly a mandate for cut-and-run policies.
Either way, your sad misinterpretation of the electorate’s wishes is a non sequitur. Bringing soldiers home will NOT end the war in Iraq.
