How Very Interesting
The deadliest bomb in Iraq is made in Iran, US intel agencies say.
The assertion of an Iranian role in supplying the device to Shiite militias reflects broad agreement among American intelligence agencies, although officials acknowledge that the picture is not entirely complete.
According to prevailing standards of Monday morning quarterbackship, we should entirely ignore this, as it will turn out to be a trumped-up lie. Or, at least, a trumped-up exaggeration. Or maybe, a trumped-up inappropriateness. Though more likely, an unfortunate truth leading to consequences that make some people uncomfortable and compel them to look for scapegoats. See what I mean?
NYT picks up the point:
Any assertion of an Iranian contribution to attacks on Americans in Iraq is both politically and diplomatically volatile. The officials said they were willing to discuss the issue to respond to what they described as an increasingly worrisome threat to American forces in Iraq, and were not trying to lay the basis for an American attack on Iran.
No, or course not. But now that you mention it … it’s an interesting idea: when people are trying to kill you, kill them first! After, you know, a little diplomacy:
The United States, using the Swiss Embassy in Tehran as an intermediary, has privately warned the Iranian government to stop providing the military technology to Iraqi militants, a senior administration official said. The British government has issued similar warnings to Iran, according to Western officials. Officials said that the Iranians had not responded.
Perhaps they’ll respond to the shutting down of their ports and borders, with a couple hundred million dollars worth of cruise missiles impacting the bomb factories and military bases that facilitate Iran’s support for the murder of American soldiers. Also, the nuke sites.
I’d add the destruction of the oil-producing infrastructure that has financed Iran’s three-decade-long terrorpalooza, but some people might find that excessive.

What so wrong with Iran controlling Iraq? What could possibly go wrong if we just let them have their “Lebensraum”?

Yeah, peolesdru, you have a point. The same kind of plan worked out well for Germany, and cost the rest of the world hardly at all. Makes you wonder what all the fuss is about.
