“That’s Why I Want to be a Marine”

Peter Gelzinis sat down with the parents of Marine Capt. Jennifer Harris, pilot of the Sea Knight that went down late last week.

When the honor student they described as “our Barbie doll girl, angelic but strong” told the family that she would become a Marine because the Marines were “the best of the best,” her grandmother cringed. “I said to her, ‘Jen, the Marines are always the first to fight.’ She tells me, ‘That’s why I want to be a Marine.’ ”

And yet, she managed to tailor her compassion to her mission. Jen Harris chose to fly a support craft rather than an attack chopper. “She didn’t want to be alone up there,” her uncle said. “She wanted to assist, to take care of the wounded. And it didn’t matter if they were fellow Marines or wounded Iraqis. Jen was always looking to help people.”

Meanwhile, with a different take on Jennifer Harris’ death with six other Americans, Michael Moore posts front and center, for his readers’ entertainment, “Stop, Hey, What’s that Sound, Everybody Look What’s Going Down,” a cleverly titled link to the insurgent footage that appears to show Harris’ chopper being shot down. US military has not given a cause but has been suggesting mechanical failure. Moore fails to mention that this killed any Americans. Al-Qaeda commentary, with musical score, probably does.

Jennifer Harris’ parents stayed away from the TV last weekend so they would not have to see it.  I recommend watching if you haven’t seen it already to witness Harris’ fight to save her ship; for a little of the gut knowledge of what they all face on our behalf.
