Wishful Thinking vs. Facts on the Ground

A Chicago Sun-Times column highlights this Steny Hoyer quote and comments:

The Democrats say they want, as the House proposal puts it, “to support and protect” the troops. Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), the smart and affable majority leader in the House, declared Wednesday that “there is not a member of this body, not one, on either side of the aisle, who does not pray for our nation’s success in Iraq.”

The American people haven’t heard much of that. The desire to support the troops doesn’t seem to go so far as having the anti-surge resolutions include language along the lines of saying, for example, “whatever our reservations about the president’s policies, we fervently hope and pray that the troops are successful in their mission.”

I think the correct phrase, charitably, would not be “pray for our nations success” but “engages in wishful thinking about our nation’s success” except the facts are quite to the contrary.  There is no Democratic plan for success whatsoever.  There are simply calls for abandonment.

Meanwhile, Bush’s hang-tough attitude gets a nod inside the Beltway from David Broder, who may not particularly like it but has been around long enough to sense a pending wind shift.

Don Surber cautions: Beware of Broders Bearing Gifts.

The Moderate Voice says give credit for an Bush rebound where credit’s due: Democratic myopia and incompetence.  Well, those aren’t exactly the words uttered by the Voice, but close enough.

I suspect, with the positive surge results and mounting evidence of Iranian meddling we’re already seeing in Baghdad, the surrender-happy Dem Cong with its obstructionist agenda is on the verge of seizing a negative from the jaws of its polling positives.

I’m sorry, but I just don’t believe it. If it were so that everyone on both sides of the aisle hoped and prayed for success, they would do everything in their considerable power to aid and abet our troops, instead of enemy. Talk is cheap. If they support the troops, they are in a position to do so with much more than cheaply bought words. Put up or shut up.

What they’re all hoping and praying for is that it turns into a huge civil war and vindicates the peace groups and the pundits who have dubbed Iraq a quagmire on day one.

I think that when they got back into power, the Democrats began to realize how far out on the limb all their crazy anti-Vietnam retreads base have pushed them. They’re hoping this non-binding resolution will appease the kooks.

I’d like to see one of these papers like the WaPo to report on the techniques of counterinsurgency and how they’ve been applied and are being applied in Iraq.
It should be clear that if we are defeated by these insurgence, all future enemies will use the same tactics, including manipulating our own media to undercut support here. Only the media can decide whether they’ll continue to allow themselves to be used as propaganda agents by the enemy.
