Ahmadinejad’s Disinformation Service

Remember when CNN was Saddam Hussein’s rangefinder service? Back in the Gulf War, when the Iraqis would launch their Scuds and the CNN reporters would call them in live.

“That one’s just on the outskirts of Dhahran!”

“That one’s a little northwest of my position here at the such-and-such hotel in Tel Aviv!”

The modern world’s great. Imagine. Justice Soldier can sit watching CNN on his base in Iraq, and laugh at the talking heads dissing Bush’s Iranian intel while …

I sat half awake in my tennis shoes waiting to see just how many fireworks the bad guys brought with them this time. So, I decided to turn on my TV. Sometimes the base blocks the stations and puts out info, but the news was still on. I don’t remember the name, but it was some CNN show. They had a panel of guests, and it was one of hose typical “negativity” hours where they slam everything. Some “analyst” from NEWSWEEK was on and as she was ranting she proclaimed “…and the President’s new intelligence on this supposed Iranian connection, well, that evidence is speculative, at best..” Right then I heard 2 more explosions rock our base. (Here in Southern Iraq we have known for a long time where the “fireworks” come from.) I thought to myself- yeah lady, I got your speculative right here for ya…. another media “expert analysis” I guess.

Thanks, Mudville.

    Lump in throat.

The men and women protecting our asses (even the dumb or misinformed or wild ass guess, elitist leftist) are absolutely stupendous.

This “band of brothers”, traces their duty, skill, bravery and honor, back some 230 years.

Soldier on, brave ones, we have your backs covered here, by any means possible.

We ask our men and women to stand the line and fight for us. We say we stand behind them and support them. Yet, when it comes down to it, we cant even bring ourselves to look traitors and enemy sympathisers in the eye and call them what they are to their faces, let alone do what tradition and the law demands be done with them.

I can and have, done this. I’m sure you have as well. As Jackson said, “One man with courage makes a majority”, with two, I guess we’re majority plus one.

“let alone do what tradition and the law demands be done with them”

This, the two of us can’t do, but we sure can push the people that can.

One can only hope that their day will come. I have to wonder, though, if there is that kind of courage left in this country.

As I watched the towers fall, I had an odd little conversation with myself, beginning with the spontaneous thought, “Now we’ll see.” I was a bit surprised, and questioned my own subconscious, “See what?” The immediate answer was, “What Viet Nam did to us.” I think we’ve seen what Viet Nam did to us.

Salty, my thoughts were pretty chaotic that day, but I had the same sneaking suspicion about the old anti Vietnam war crowd rearing their ugly heads. Sure enough, within days I was having loud, unpleasant conversations with people who thought we “deserved it”, and our country has been fighting that same pernicious poison ever since.

Salty, Rebecca-I saw the oscar recommendations this week and I couldn’t believe that United 93 did not get a best picture nomination. I think the relative indifference to this movie-which was a stark reminder of the day-was a barometer of public indifference. I heard too many say “it’s too soon” when I told them they needed to see it. That was code for “leave me alone, I don’t want to be reminded”, and they didn’t want to be reminded of the events of that day or the duty that was required of them because of those events.

There is a photo making the rounds of a Marine patrol somewhere in the desert which has written some grafitti on a wall saying “America is not at war in Iraq. The Marine Corps is at war in Iraq, America is at the mall”. Too many of our countrymen mentally and emotionally checked out of the war a long time ago.
