Another F-Word
Free speech cuts a lot of different ways. Ann Coulter calls John Edwards a “faggot.” Whatever. More bomb-throwing from someone who is all schtick, focused on seeing how outrageous she can be. Nothing new about that in shock comedy, which is what she’s about. She needed to top the “ragheads” remark at last year’s CPAC. I’m guessing CPAC got exactly what CPAC wanted from Coulter. All kinds of attention. Why else would they invite her back to a serious political venue? Ditto Mitt Romney, who’s dropping in the polls and needs something, anything, and leapt at the chance to introduce Coulter and be cool with the hard right.
Anyway, Coulter just proved herself wrong as I’m guessing she isn’t going to rehab.
The Left is predictably outraged and indignant, and so is the Right.
Here are people who wish Coulter would shut up:
Idiotic. Disgusting. Stupid. Moronic.
I guess you could say that Ann loves to shock us, but at this point, who’s shocked? She obviously can’t behave well enough to attend a respectable political gathering.
Yeah, that’s just what CPAC needs — an association with homophobia. Nice work, Ann.
She needs to update her material, though, since she’s making Phil Donohue jokes. Hint: No one under 40 has any clue who he is. (The joke, in the form of an SAT question, was that Hillary Clinton is comparing herself to Margaret Thatcher. Coulter thinks the analogy would be Margaret Thatcher : Ronald Reagan as Hillary Clinton : Phil Donohue. No, it wasn’t any funnier in person.)
She closed, with no apparent transition, saying that since you now have to enter rehab for uttering the word “faggot,” she wouldn’t be talking about John Edwards. (No, I don’t get it, either.)
what Coulter did amounts to the hijacking of an event meant for, evidently, far more serious minded individuals than she. It isn’t about you, Ann. In fact, a great many conservatives couldn’t care less if you breathe, curse, cavort, or simply pose.
Your actions at CPAC did nothing to advance the cause of conservatism in America; they accomplished just the opposite. I hope you’re proud, you insufferable self-indulgent political media equivalent to Anna Nicole
A smattering of laughter.
Not from this corner.
Crickets chirping.
Here are people who are shocked by Coulter’s remarks and hope she keeps making them:
Audience members said “ohhh” and then cheered.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean:
“There is no place in political discourse for this kind of hate-filled and bigoted comments. While Democrats and Republicans may disagree on the issues, we should all be able to agree that this kind of vile rhetoric is out of bounds. The American people want a serious, thoughtful debate of the issues. Republicans — including the Republican presidential candidates who shared the podium with Ann Coulter today — should denounce her hateful remarks.”
After receiving an introduction from Mitt Romney, Ann Coulter took to the stage at CPAC, called John Edwards a “faggot”, and, later, apparently endorsed the Romney campaign. Why doesn’t this kind of thing ever seem to make media trouble for Republicans. I feel like any progressive even vaguely associated with the hint of impropriety faces massive pressure to “distance” himself, apologize, disavow his friends, etc.
Does Coulter speak for Mitt Romney? The list of Coulterisms is a long one and not, one would think, something Romney wants to embrace.
This is funny. TBogg, faithful husband, soccer dad, etc., delighted that Coulter is saying something outrageously homophobic, gets into the act himself with some nasty misogynism: “So at the quarter pole we see that Coulter is now leading Michelle Malkin by an Adam’s apple.”
Denounce him, Howard Dean!

[...] –Iowa Progress:“While this may lead to some conspiracy theories that Ann Coulter is trying to secretly build up Edwards at the expense of Obama or Clinton, it’s doubtful that she’s capable of such subtle thought. Frankly, Ann Coulter has a long history of being a crude cancer on our nation’s political discourse. This was merely another opportunity for her to flaunt her poor taste, lack of judgment and thirst for any kind of publicity.” –Jules Crittenden:“More bomb-throwing from someone who is all schtick, focused on seeing how outrageous she can be. I’ve never understood her appeal, beyond the obvious leer factor. I’ve long considered her a stupid broad, and an albatross around the neck of grown-up Rep. pols. Why was she invited to a “serious” political event? I put serious in quotations because inviting her brings into question just how serious the event is.
It seems that neither political party can help shooting itself in the foot. I have friends who voted for a Dem Cong in the last election in order to register their displeasure with the Republicans. The message seems to have gotten lost somewhere between the ballot box and D.C.

Ann Coulter is just another rich snob who thinks it is cool to play with politics. She should be shunned. I don’t even understand the leer factor. She is flat chested and has a face like Mr. Ed’s.

Jules to try and link this to Mitt Romney is ridiculous. Romney is not dropping in the polls. He also knocked them dead at CPAC last night.
http://powerlineblog.com/archives/016922.php
“Readers may recall that I was disappointed by Mitt Romney’s speech at National Review’s conservative summit. But Mitt didn’t disappoint today at CPAC. Instead, building on the theme of a unified conservative movement articulated by Ronald Reagan at the same forum 30 years ago, Romney presented a fiery defense of all three major strands of conservatism — economic, social, and security.
I don’t think anyone doubts Romney’s economic conservatism or his support for a strong defense and an aggressive assault against the jihadists. However, Romney has not consistently taken socially conservative positions. Today, instead of trying to explain his conversion to social conservatism as he did at the NR event, he simply focused on what he did as Massachusetts governor to support marriage as it has always been defined, and to oppose the judicial activists who have taken in upon themselves to redefine the institution. That, I think, is the right approach.
In the absence of another first-tier Republican candidate with a longer track-record of up-front social conservatism, Romney is the social conservative in this race as far as I’m concerned. Indeed, one would be hard-pressed to listen to his speech of today and doubt that Romney is the most solidly conservative of the three front-runners, period.
Speaking of the rest of the field, Romney took two good shots at John McCain, who has chosen to bypass the CPAC event. First, Romney vowed that, as president, he would work for the repeal of McCain-Feingold. Second, he expressed strong opposition to the McCain-Kennedy immigration package. He also took a shot at the MSM when he noted that, while some pundits are (again) predicting the demise of conservatism, he expects the movement to be around longer than, say, newspapers.
Romney concluded his speech by focusing on the matter of increased economic competition from Asia, especially China. The path to success in this competition, he argued passionately, is through reliance on our strength as a free people. And that means reliance on conservative principles as advanced by the kind of unified conservative movement Reagan called for 30 years ago.
Romney has taken plenty of hits lately but today, I think, he produced a hit — an extra-base hit.”

Nobody said the right doesn’t have its own nutballs. Fortunately, they usually end up sidelining themselves, and in this case, Ms. Coulter has had her come-to-Jesus moment. We’ll see if it takes.

Incidentally, if you’re going to go out with hate speech, at least pick a word that applies, and pick a worthier target than the utterly fatuous John Edwards.

I read Coulter a few times, and never since…….she makes good points, but generally ends up rolling in her own poop.
The sooner she either cleans up her act or sidelines herself, the better.

I laughed when I read it.

Pretty much a worn act. She is starting to appear more an aberration of someone like Judith Regan - shock versus substance. To those more in the center who would vote for a right-sided ticket she is not to be considered a lucky charm.

Aaah, remember the halcyon days of the “permanent majority” when nothing seemed too outrageous?
Turns out we live in a democracy.
D’oh!

THIS INCIDENT is a great opportunity for conservatives, because Coulter can be temporarily “disowned” for intolerance and lack of respect. Two good things: liberals have claimed they owned tolerance, reciprocity, mutual respect, but they have abandoned it (e.g. Raw Story, Daily Kos hate speech). This is high ground that’s good to grab, especially since conservatives deserve that ground, as we see in the case of Coulter, where they are willing to defend it, even against one of their own. Second, it’s a good chance to reign Coulter in a bit. She needs it, but overall I like her, and much of what she says, with her snappy texting, and heavy irony, she cuts through a lot of crap. She just needs to renounce the hate speech.

No! Really? Is that why you were never arrested by Cheney’s secret police?
I did wonder, in spite of my repeated pleas for your immediate incarceration to Lord Karl. Now I know.

Coulter exists to inflame moonbats. Her audience is NOT conservatives, its moonbats. Inflamed moonbats go off on rants and say stupid shit far beyond criticizing whatever provocation she uttered.
Inflamed moonbats ranting stupid shit elects more republicans. Its that simple with her.
The moonbats swallow the bait every time.
