Out of His Hands
Bush wants communism in Cuba to end with Castro. If the Cuban people will it so. Castro’s end? Someone else needs to vote on that:
“How long he stays on earth, that’s a decision that will be made by the Almighty,” Bush told foreign journalists Tuesday ahead of a week-long trip to Latin America.
“I don’t know how long he’s going to live. But nevertheless, I do believe that the system of government that he’s imposed upon the people ought not live if that’s what the people decide.”
Cubans want to be commies? Let them vote. After the Almighty gets his vote in. Now, which way would Cubans go? So far, all we now is how they’ve been voting with their paddles. Or whatever.
Coming in advance of Bush’s Latin American charm offensive, this suggests it will be a show worth watching. Other forces have been ascendant there. Here’s the view from Venezuela. Here’s the Council of Foreign Relations’ take. Farther leftward, have you had your dose of Chomsky today? You have to scroll down for the Latin America part, but take your time because the North Korea and Iran parts are fun, too.

I expect a power struggle when Fidelito kicks the bucket. Raul might be a ruthless son of a bitch, but he’s no spring chicken. And I bet there’s a cadre of younger communistas in Havana who would like to get in on the capitalismo that the rest of the world is enjoying.
