GOP vs. GOP
Red on Red as Mass Republicans launch a scorched earth campaign vs. Mitt Romney. This is going to be an ugly campaign season. They claim not to be carrying anyone else’s water.
Founded by GOP consultants Holly Robichaud and Ron Vining, the Mass Republicans for Truth plans to launch a nationwide attack on the former governor’s record - including radio and TV ads.
“He’s running for the highest office in the nation and voters need to know the entire record,” said Robichaud. “We can’t elect an unknown quantity to president of the United States.”
Never mind that none of this is exactly unknown.
The Massachusetts Republican party has been a strange, self-destructive place for a long time, usually with candidates who shoot themselves in the foot, rather than having other Republicans do it for them. People who lie about war records, get naked, weird stuff like that, or are just ineffective, goofy, self-serving or in over their heads. Normal politicians, in other words, but they have lack the numbers to mount many serious challenges or any challenges at all in many cases. But they were able in statewide races to hold the corner office for 16 years as a counterbalance to the overwhelmingly Democratic Legislature. Unfortunately, since Bill Weld was elected 16 years ago, GOP numbers in the Legislature that gave him some leverage in the Senate have plummeted.
There’s no question that Romney would appear to have adapted his positions to suit his electoral needs over the years, used his one-term governorship for a springboard, and has now positioned himself hard right for a national run. But this kind of GOP vs. GOP is a disturbing development, and this degree of dislike is a bit of a surprise. It will be interesting to watch this and see whose water they are carrying. Social moderates who feel betrayed or just indignant, principled friendly fire? The latter out of political consultants would be a bit rich.

Yep, Red on Red, is bad. Blue on Blue, is good.
Political Winds Shifting On Iraq?
To see how frustrated the Democrats are feeling, check out this video of Congressman David Obey going ballistic on a group of antiwar liberals. It’s gratifying to hear Obey denouncing “idiot liberals” in terms like these:
How the hell do you think we’re going to get the votes to cut off the war? … If that’s not good enough for you, you’re smoking something illegal… You’ve got your facts screwed up…we can’t get the votes! You see a magic wand in my pocket? How the hell we going to get the votes for it? We ain’t got the votes for it. We do have the votes if you guys quite screwing it up.
This is a don’t miss video:

I watched the video. I’m curious how these people have the money to make walking the corridors of government an avocation.
I think the honored member was on the rag.
I’m not looking forward to the coming election. The only positive I can see is that Bush won’t be running so we won’t have to hear the particular slander usually used against him. They’ll have to find a new “Hitler” to sling mud at. It’s too much to ask that those who sling that particular epithet actually learn something about the history of the Nazis, or even to learn what makes a fascist. Of course, that would mean that they be serious and thoughtful, focusing on something besides simple and generalized hatred, but they are human beings and have the ability to choose to think–hope springs eternal.
I would admonish the Republicans to do the same, by the way. I’d really like to hear people debate the important things, as opposed replacing debate with mud-slinging. I know. I’m old enough to know better. Sigh.
