Four Years On
Anniversary roundup: The AP’s Jennifer Loven on Bush’s Iraq speech is worthless, as usual, setting up cherrypicked targets for the Dems to swing at with predictable rejoinders, or for the AP itself to belabor with poll results, none of which offer anything of any use to either Iraqi or American interests. Ignores polling that fails to stay in lanes.
WaPo does considerably better.
Here’s the actual speech: Bush calls for courage, patience, resolve. Withdrawal a recipe for disaster.
Rice, making the rounds, acknowledges going in with half an army wasn’t the brightest move. Also wants patience, current strategy only way to go. Pol round up here.
Meanwhile, Hitchens explains why Iraq had to be invaded, and why it still makes sense today, and why the pitying looks of all the Monday-morning quarterbacks don’t bother him.
Surber: popular 4 years ago doesn’t make it right and unpopular 4 years later doesn’t make it wrong. Finish the job.
Kos declares it “delusional.” Kos of course is an expert in delusional thinking, but should probably stay away from discussions of sacrifice.
This is good: Delusionally pro-Kerry Dem Daily quotes him saying “patience isn’t a strategy.” Sitting down with the people who are supporting the terrorism to ask them how they would like us to leave is a strategy, however.
More WaPo: military ill-prepared for other conflicts. So, let’s build it. Anyone out there think we aren’t going to need it?
