Find the news! Hint: you have to look around a bit.

NYT headline:

Army Revises Upward Number of Desertions in ‘06.

NYT lede:

A total of 3,196 active-duty soldiers deserted the Army last year, or 853 more than previously reported, according to revised figures from the Army.

Actual relevant news unearthed from NYT article (reprocessed for rapid readability and comprehension):

Military desertions during the Iraq War period remain below peacetime levels. Desertions rates actually jumped  in 2001, with nearly 1,000 more soldiers deserting when all we were doing was invading Afghanistan and hunting for Osama bin Laden, than since we opened the second GWOT front in Iraq, when desertions dropped. Desertion rates during Vietnam Redux nowhere near desertion rates during Classic Vietnam.  The 2006 increase mentioned above is still many hundreds below the popular war period of 2001 and 2002.

What’s the matter with these lunkhead soldiers!  Don’t they know Bush lied! No WMD!  It’s a civil war!

Scrappleface news:

“When Democrats say ‘We support the troops’,” Rep. Pelosi said, “these are the troops we’re talking about.”

Welcome Punditeers:  Sun’s over the yardarm, pour yourself one.  Not one of these though. Nobody wants to drink that.  The non-drinkers are having fun with Google Earth.  Need a bite, try some pork with a side of surrender.  If you just want to kick back and have a quiet read, here’s some goodnewsbadnews.

Isn’t it amazing how the facts may be used to report a skewed reality. All you have to do is cherry pick which facts to use and drop the context. The pols and media understand this well enough; they use it as an excuse often enough when they are quoted “out of” it.

Yeah, Canada isn’t what it used to be. What with global warming and everything, if you go to Canada you run the risk of having to compete with the polar bears that are leaving Ellsmere Island for Toronto bed-sits. No one wants to have an angry & extremely intemperate polar bear as a room-mate or next door neighbor. No, the best thing to do if you’re in the armed forces and in Iraq or Afghanistan is to put up with all the ethnic and religious turmoil, avoid the IED’s and continue the fight until Nancy and Sluggo Murtha find a way to bring you back Frank Buck style - Alive!
