Good News Bad News

If you’re looking for some good news, we’re throwing sacks of it off the back of the truck. Come get some:

Near the top of anyone’s list has to be al-Qaeda’s woes in two primary areas of operation. Iraq and Pakistan, where AQ is doing our work for us, losing hearts and minds faster than we are winning them.

It’s always great news when your enemies begin fighting among themselves.  NYT helpfully notes, “Pakistani government officials … watched it with considerable optimism.

Bloody good news as the Pommie Bastids scoop up three re 7/7.

Speaking of Poms, the Queen pins Brit Distinguished Flying Cross on a USMC chopper pilot, first Yank so decorated since the Big One.

The week began with vile news, more evidence that terrorists in Iraq, and those who harbor them, are committed to killing their own people in the most heinous ways they can manage.  But Omar at Iraq the Model sees the silver lining: al-Qaeda, by declaring war on the tribes of Anbar, has made a big mistake.  It didn’t take long for the tribes of Anbar to prove him right.

Old news: the history of troubles between the Anbar tribes and al-Qaeda is laid out here, and analysis of recent developments here.

Bernard Lewis examines the news through an old lens.

Satisfying news: Michael Yon tells Glenn and Helen the surge is proceeding apace, “community policing” techniques producing new intel from Iraqis on the street.

(Michael Yon here has thoughts on why there is never enough news.  This includes the breaking bad news that a US general wants him out of there. The US is close to achieving moron supremacy ionIraq if this is true. The military’s failure to fully support the embed program not good news.  In addition to issues Yon mentions, there is the ban on trans-Atlantic military flights, credentialling processes that don’t require embeds to needlessly take their lives in their hands, etc.)

Success in subduing the Mahdi Army without destroying it is not a lasting success, as this bad news about Iran taking direct control of extremist elements suggests. Strata-sphere looks at that cloudy news and sees a silver-lining divide-and-conquer thing going on. AJ’s strataspheric over the flood of good news, including the arrest of two Sadrist bros in connection with the abduction and murder of five Americans in Karbala.

Skittish news: the new UN SecGen ducks behind his podium when something blows up outside.  It’s Baghdad. What did you expect. Sheesh.

Australian news: John Howard won’t pull out, even if it costs him the election.  Here’s hoping it won’t.

Fascinating news: Pelosi threatened to pull plum committee posts from Dems who don’t toe the line on Iraq. Political firings!  Where are the emails! … kidding.  Anyway, apparently it’s not about winning or losing in Iraq. It’s about beating Bush!

Getting their news from Pelosi are the ultra-lib anti-war Dems, who now say they won’t block the warbucks, pullout schedule being a greater good that trumps the evil of funding killing.  Whatever. Now they’re de-funding for genocide … or will be if they can get past that veto!

News Update: Pro-Pork, Pro-Surrender Dems prevail in the House.  News that would appear to be bad, but is meaningless except in that it has put a lot of people on the record …  for pork, and for surrender. This bill will never become law.

Good news: a Democrat goes, sees, has an aha moment. The good captain, mulling the news quotes Yeats, famously, “the center does not hold.”

As long as we’re parsing the Left, let’s dissect it! Or at least watch as Cardinalpark and Tigerhawk slice and dice.

Paul at Powerline emerges from several days of lawyering to learn the glad news that Gonzalez is still AG … not that he’s a big Gonzalez fan but he hates a political hit. Antidote to all of that non-news: subpoena Leahy’s staff.

News of the Strange: Jawa reports that Kember the Captive wants his captors spared not just death, but prison, so piously other-cheeky is he.  Dr. Shackleford notes that Muslim literalism doesn’t work that way.

Grasping news: British hoax bomber says it was a form of protest.

News at 11: hometown hero Dadmanly on his local Fox affiliate re Iraq, plus copperhead musings.

Good news: they’re paying attention to the VA again. Bad news: they’re finding a lot of crap.  Castle Argghhh!!! for all your veterans affairs attitude checks and armoring news.

Not news … that would be how the counter-protest was viewed.

Space News: Cindy Sheehan “in the shadow of the Deathstar.”

I’m not sure Cat Ownership Offsets counts as news yet, but it ought to. Ace is offering sex offsets, which is news you may or may not want to use, and links to a few other kinds.  Do your bit for … whatever!

Film news: Miss Attila saw everything she needed to see in 300. My buddy Eade, he’s seen that movie before.

Ha! We close on a up note with the news that a moderate Muslim leader offers to defend, free of charge, the John and Jane Does included in the Flying Imams’ nuisance suit!
