Sinko de Froggo
Tigerhawk, in this entertainingly edited homage to Sarkozy, observes that Cinco de Mayo is not only a marketing opportunity for Corona, it is the day we celebrate Mexico’s defeat of French efforts to meddle in our business. Among one or two other inconvenient truths. T’hawk calls Sarko an “overt Yankeephile.” I say the proof will be in the mousse.
Meanwhile, the French celebrate the return of French pride.

As far as I’m concerned, the fifth of May is simply a day to drink beer and eat Mexican food, and if you’ve picked the right restaurant, to listen to some really good kitschy mariachi. The French don’t signify at all.

I appreciate what Sarko said, even not discounting the, ummmmm, liberties withe history. But it would be nice for France to actually do something. Something tangible. And then I’ll start taking France more seriously.
Because there’s one thing that France excels at, and that’s talking a good line. So I’ll wait and see.

Sarkozy does seem to rekindle French elan, though he’s got his hands full in both foreign and domestic policy. He’s definitely better than the alternative. As for Mexico, interesting point about Cinco de Mayo — I’ll never again look at those (emptied) bottles of Dos Equis in the same way!
