Motherthink
I always thought Mother’s Day was about being nice to Mom. Making her breakfast, making her a card, giving her a kiss. You know, gratitude for the nurturing, the self-sacrifice, all of that.
Wrong.
I never understood, but I am beginning to grasp it now. Mother’s Day is about overthrowing the bonds of millennia of male domination and warmongering. Mother’s Day is about the needs of the state. Mother’s Day is about the righteousness of women in service of society boldly leading the way into a bright new future. D’oh! Now that my thinking has been corrected, allow me to aid in your re-education:
The Nation: “The Motherhood Manifesto”
Michigan for Edwards: “A Mother’s Day Manifesto and the Democratic Agenda”
Pelosi: “As a Mother.” (Motherhood vs. Imperialist Aggression)
Daily Kos: From the primordial swamp, motherhood Darwinianly reared its head and whelped the near perfect being: the Kossack. At least I think that’s what “The Gift” is about.
Talk Left: “If women ran the government, there would be no wars of aggression. Women, for obvious reasons, have no need to prove how big their ‘equipment’ can be.” (Government as a delusion exercise in sexism)
Kerry, who apparently didn’t get the memo, celebrates motherhood as an expression of imperialist aggression. Different!
Pravda has always been obsessed with western culture, not always in a nice way. When is Commie Mother’s Day, anyway? Maybe its like one of those Labor Day things where they have theirs, we have ours. The closest thing I could find to a Mother’s Day story there was “Various media outlets portray breasts differently.” (Pamela Anderson work-safe but probably not Mother’s Day safe breast alert)
Welcome Punditeers! Happy Mothers Day, but not for Momullah. Dadullah won’t be down for breakfastullah. Mother always said use your words, and Cheney says we’ll be talking to the mullahs. Anyone for a little rock, paper, scissors, cruise missile?
Remember, as you observe the day, it’s a rough Mothers Day for eight moms and three mothers’ son.

Maybe Mother’s Day should be changed to Parade of the Sanctimonies Day.
Although, I have to hand it to Kerry, as little as I think of him. That was kind of a classy thing to do, despite my own cynical mind telling me he’s just trying to rehabilitate his reputation.

I know Senator Kerry very well… 1 1/2 years blogging for his campign and 2 1/2 years since actively following his work in the Senate. I’ve had the good fortune to spend a fair amount of time with him over the years and talk with him one on one for more just a handshake and a hello.
What he did was heartfelt and genuine and a very much who he is. Last month, my daughter and I were his guests in the green room when he was in L.A. taping the Tavis Smiley show. You might read this post about that day and find a different understanding of the Senator - http://blog.thedemocraticdaily.com/?p=5583

Can you ever not be cynical? Happy Mother’s Day to your wife.

Cynicism and John Kerry can be compared to condoms and AIDS.

A Day for Mother’s

Pamela, thank you for your invitation. I did indeed follow the link and read, and it hasn’t changed my mind about John Kerry at all. I’m sure he can be very charming and personable, and that was a nice thing he did for that poor mother. He is a politician, after all, and that’s what they do: politick, nor would I expect anything else from any politician. It’s part of their job. I don’t think he is an idiot or a monster in his private life (as so many on your side of the spectrum have painted George Bush, for instance), but how he behaves in his private life and how he has performed in public are two very different things. And you are too young to truly appreciate the depth of bitterness he has left among people of my generation. So thank you again for the invitation to change my mind about him, but I must respectfully decline.

Your generation? Would that be the Vietnam generation? If so, I’m 50. I grew up in MA and lived there for 33 years before moving to Los Angeles 17 years ago. I still have family and close friends in MA who admire and respect Kerry as much as I do.
I’m quite certain George W Bush behaves differently too, as a poltician. I get quite well that all famous people are real people deep down inside. Living in L.A. I have met quite a few genuinely nice actors and musicians who are very well known.

most politicians (and journalists), and sen kerry in particular, are not real people. normal human beings must be capable of saying (or at least thinking) all of the following : (1) i need help; (2) i don’t know; and (3) i was wrong. match those three human qualities against your favorite politician/journalist and see if they qualify as a mensch.

I’ve heard all of the above from Senator Kerry.

When people like Kerry stop demanding that all the rest of us be mules to carry the burden of their altruism, perhaps us rugged individualists won’t have to work like mules just to care for our families.
