A Quick Glance Around on the Ground

Max Boot gets an email from Baghdad on the need to stand by Iraq:  “How long, you ask? I am on my second tour following a year in Tikrit from 2004-2005. A realistic goal is to have stabilized this region by the time my eleven-year-old son is old enough to serve in the military.”  Views don’t get much more grounded than that.

Guardian correspondent embedded with Iranian-linked Shiite militias in Basra watches them fire at British forces.  I can’t imagine the Guardian wanted to present the case for a strengthened British presence and vigorous action against Iran, but that’s what this article does.

Michael Yon goes a week in Anbar without hearing a shot fired.

Most struck by the wall art. Even in the crappiest place on the planet, people will still try to create a little beauty and peace. It never ceases to amaze me, and give me hope for the human race.

I wish that in 1991 we had gone on to B’dad. Then my 19 year old would not be training up to go. Hopefully his sacriface can end it before his baby (12yo) brother has to go.
