French Shift
Sarkozy’s foreign minister is a pro-American leftist who supported the invasion of Iraq and wants French troops to stay in Afghanistan, unlike Sarkozy. French Jew whose grandparents died at Auschwitz. As Belgravia notes, this could set up an interesting dynamic on Iran. And are his humanitarian impulses re Iraq likely to translate into action there? I wouldn’t hold my breath. However, the stagnant, obstructionist pond that is French foreign policy is being stirred up a little.
