Requiem
Attended 1st Lt. Andrew Bacevich’s funeral yesterday with three friends, Larry Gwin, Paul Clifford and John Nelson Ferrara, all combat veterans of Vietnam, the latter a friend of the elder Bacevich, and wrote this.
My 11-year-old son wanted to know that if it was sad, and I told him yes, it was. But I explained to him that when you go to a funeral, and see so many people come to honor someone who didn’t take an easy path in life, who did everything he could, and lived life as hard as he could, and gave up his life trying to help other people, you can’t be completely sad. You also feel inspired.Â
Earlier post, Beloved son.

Heard his father on the radio this morning in a very touching interview. He said he’d never told his son about his doubts about the war because he didn’t want to shake his morale. Now, looking back, he isn’t sure he had done the right thing. And he wondered whether his speaking out publicly is enough, since “it’s absolutely clear” that Americans are against the war, and yet the government does not budge.
