Iran Plans

ABC’s Blotter: Bush authorizes new covert action against Iran:

The CIA has received secret presidential approval to mount a covert “black” operation to destabilize the Iranian government, current and former officials in the intelligence community tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com.

The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the subject, say President Bush has signed a “nonlethal presidential finding” that puts into motion a CIA plan that reportedly includes a coordinated campaign of propaganda, disinformation and manipulation of Iran’s currency and international financial transactions.

What? We aren’t doing that already?

I’d be curious to know whether the people blabbing are authorized or unauthorized to blab, and whether this is a purposeful effort to send a message, a disgruntled leak or someone who just can’t keep his mouth shut. Given that the message would appear to be “We won’t attack,” I’m not sure how useful it is to put this out.  That just tells the Iranians going into next week’s Iraq talks that they don’t need to worry about military consequences. In their current condition, however, the mullahs may see economic covert ops as much worse, alienating the Iranian people further from their government, rather than military action they could use to try to unite Iranians against an external threat.

Speaking of Iran, the following isn’t a huge surprise, but I’m a little surprised yet again to see the Guardian banging the drum vs. Iran: “Iran’s secret plan for summer offensive to force  U.S. out of Iraq.”

    Outrage!

The ABC blog “The Blotter” has a report by Brian Ross and Richard Esposito concerning the existence of a “Presidential Finding” that authorizes the CIA to begin a campaign of “covert “black” operation to destabilize the Iranian government.”

This is good news. Anything that will spike the price of gasoline above $6 a gallon is good news for climate change.

    Isn’t your message a little, ah, off-topic?

Alas, saltydog, trolls never play by the rules, else they would not be trolls, but people desiring rational discussion.

I agree, Jules. However, no where does it say Bush won’t attack Iran; it just says that new covert actions against Iran are authorized. That’s my read, given the large naval task force near Iran.
