Jules-Sulaiman Bek was in our AO during TF Peacemakers (2/278th ACRs) rotation to the desert in 2005. I have been to that building many times-in fact the night of the first election in 2005 I spent the night in my ambulance just outside the building waiting for the election results to be tallied.
The main city just to the north is Tuz Khurmatu which is predominantly Kurdish. Sulaiman Bek, which is only about 5 miles or so to the south is Sunni Arab as is another village to the west of Tuz called Yanjiah. We did not have many problems in Tuz, but there were several car bombings there-many close to the mayor’s office targeting visiting Kurds. We spent a lot of time in Sulaiman Bek and Yanjiah.
I’ve met some of the IP who worked there (can’t really say I knew them), but I do know several of the IA who were stationed at Bernstein (which I think we have turned over completely to the IA). The IA medical platoon leader for the IA battalion at Bernstein lived in a town just south of Sulaiman Bek and I knew him well. Now I’m worried about him.
Is Jack Army on a MITT team?
