Season’s Over

But it was a great one. My scorekeeping was off.  They were 11-2 last week, not “something like 17-2,” though it felt like it, most of those wins heavily lopsided. They’re 11-3 now, because the mighty Pirates got a taste of their own medicine and got sunk by the Mets in their National League Championship game tonight. 14-5.

It got pretty ugly in the 4th and 5th.  Pirates had a brief rally in the 6th, scoring a couple and fighting to stay alive, but they were down to one out and couldn’t do it. Hard-fought game, but the Mets had the pitching and the bats tonight, and the Pirates didn’t. The Mets go to the World Series, the Pirates went for ice cream.

Ian Crittenden, age 11, walked and then stole second and third with a couple of pretty spectacular slides, a lot of dust. Lined out in his second at bat.  Playing second base, he caught one out, forced two out at second and threw one out at first. Last week, you’ll recall, was Ian’s great day, with his walk-off single that batted in the winning run when they were tied 12-12 game in extra innings.

Great team, played well together.  Mikey, pitching, catching and a jaw-dropping Hollywood shortstop when he wasn’t showing off. Davy, great pitching, batting and a shameless thief of bases, and he wasn’t the only one. Homerun-hitting Cam and Mike. Neil, solid catching, pitching and batting. Solid hitters and fielders James, Cullen, Nick, Petey, Pat, Ian. Nick and Petey were no slouches as pitchers, either, Petey stepping up as a closer. A great coach, Dave Hillner, focused on performance, discipline and sportsmanship.

“Finally, a winning team,” says Ian, who doesn’t seem to mind the loss too much.
