Cavemen
NYT, citing chatter among administration officials and senatorial wavering, predicts a Bush cave on Iraq withdrawal.
Given NYT’s history of highly selective reporting and wishful thinking, it’s unclear how reality-based this report is.
The political demise of Bush and his war policy have been prematurely predicted before. However, the growing number of GOP senators who are joining Democrats to undercut U.S. military commanders on the ground when their strategy is showing results in Iraq is cause for concern.

Bush made it plain that he might well draw down numbers if the surge were successful. I would wait and see what this means. So far as I know the man himself has said nothing that might lead anyone to think he is caving on anything. It might just be politics.

this is a most horrifying time.
if Bush can hold out… and remember, among the people ‘advising’ him are all his father’s old friends (Scowcroft, etc.) They will be saying that the US must get out if the Republicans are not to lose the next election.
I don’t see that. I say that the only hope for the Republicans is a reasonably successful surge, and strong war leadership on the part of the nominee. But what do I know? Nothing.
Except that if I were running Turkey, I would have 140,000 troops at the ready on my Iraqi border. And if I were Assad, I would be in the process of moving into Lebanon… wait. Gosh, that’s happening already.
What’s next, now… Saudi Arabia purchasing any really awful weapon it can afford. Jordan? What will Jordan do? We know that Iran will get to battle stations early on.
There won’t be too many countries sorry to see the USA crippled again, by the way. Lots of snickers, as champagne glasses clink around the world. ..until the effects of its demise are felt. Like chaos in the oil fields and piracy in the China Sea.
Oh well.
