AQ Enroute

The latest ABC Blotter terror alert is a lot like that last ”Spectacular” one. It doesn’t tell us much we didn’t already know:

Senior U.S. intelligence officials tell ABC News new intelligence suggests a small al Qaeda cell is on its way to the United States, or may already be here.

Al-Qaeda would like to attack us again, and has been working on it for years.

The White House has convened an urgent multi-agency meeting for Thursday afternoon to deal with the new threat.

This part makes it more interesting:

And officials say the London attackers use of the Internet left important clues that are being used to decode other e-mails that had initially been deemed unimportant but are now taking on new significance.

A senior administration official said the level of concern of a new terror attack is now higher than it has been in some time, and the meeting this week in the situation room is one of a number that have been convened in light of the new intelligence and what happened in London.

Hopefully whoever is enroute or already here is as incompetent as the London attackers and the Fort Dix and JFK plotters.  I wouldn’t count on it, though.  In any case, contrary to the misconceptions of some wags, catching bumblers doesn’t mean you didn’t stop a deadly attack.

Chertoff says he has a “gut feeling.” He should. It’s his job. His gut should be constantly in knots over whether he and everyone working for him are doing everything they possibly can and doing it smart. But what he means is:

“Summertime seems to be appealing to them,” Chertoff said in his discussion with the newspaper about terrorists. “We worry that they are rebuilding their activities.”

Other U.S. counterterrorism officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, shared Chertoff’s concern and said that al-Qaida and like-minded groups have been able to plot and train more freely in the tribal areas along the Afghan-Pakistani border* in recent months. Osama bin Laden and his top deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, are believed to be hiding in the rugged region.

“The threat coming out of there is very real, even if there aren’t a lot of specifics attached to it,” one of the officials said.

* Trolls will kindly weigh in here on how come Chimpy/Rove/Cheney haven’t run them out of there yet like Kerry would have, and how once all the troops are out of Iraq’s civil war that our presence renders worse than genocide, we can send them to Afghanistan and invade Pakistan to fight the real war on terrorism. Except they want them out of Afghanistan, too, because terrorism is a criminal behavior that is a police problem, and grossly exaggerated in any case to justify George Bush’s desire to read lefty emails.

Here’s a mental exercise for trolls then: imagine what happens to Pakistan if the terrorists hit us with nuclear material and we discover they got it from Pakistan.

Boy am I glad to know that enigma has been broken. Gee, I could have let a whole bunch slip if I were ignorant about that information.
