Poll Party

From the mouths of governments in their infancy. National Security Advisor Mowaffak Rubaie at LA Times:

Iraqi and coalition security forces are having major success against Al Qaeda and some of the other groups that are the principal sources of the violence that aims to overthrow our young democracy. From Al Anbar to Diyala, from Nineveh to Basra, the atrocities of the terrorists against our people are backfiring, and our citizens are coming forward to offer themselves to counter them.

Increasingly, Iraqis are showing confidence in our steadily improving security forces by leading them to hidden weapons and terrorist locations.

Iraq is continuing to increase the size and capabilities of its forces in the expectation that soon it will be able to decrease its reliance on coalition forces for direct combat functions. In no other modern country has the creation of new forces been as rapid and effective as in Iraq.

We also recognize that we have a long way to go …

On the political and diplomatic fronts, we are also making steady progress. We have a government that requires consensus to make decisions. Unlike the dictatorial and authoritarian regimes of the past, our democracy cannot act quickly against the wishes of its constituents — something our supporters abroad should celebrate, not criticize.

“Government requires consensus … unlike dictatorial and authoritarian regimes of the past, our democracy cannot act quickly against the wishes of its constituents … “

Sounds like which democratically elected mandate-poor body

Let’s check in on that mandate.

NYT/CBS poll: support for initial Iraq invasion inching up as White House asks public to give Petraeus a chance.  Fascinating, coming from rabidly anti-admin news organizations.

That makes this a curious result from WaPo: More Americans want Congress at the reins in Iraq.

So Americans have less confidence in Congress than Bush, in the wake of repeated futile flailings by Dem leadership.  Yet they want want hapless Congress in control.  But Bush strategy should have a chance in increasingly popular war.

Poll to govern by, please.

Or maybe, an election:  Cindy Sheehan for Speaker!  Mandate of the people! Free the Capitol Hill 46! If they have the $50 a pop, that is!

    “Let’s check that mandate…”

The election of Hamas was a clear mandate from the Palestinian people to…

    self destruct?

Leaders can take a “mandate” and drive it off a cliff any way they want. The MSM will still call it the “will of the people” at 51% or “democracy in action”.

The LAT and NYT wrote a small handful of neutral/positive pieces recently. Its amazing what even the smallest dose of honest news can accomplish when the public is presented with it.

Our Founders loudly and rightly disparaged Democracy as rule by the mob, and inimical to individual rights. That is why they instituted a constitutionally limited–with the limits being on the government, not the people–Republic and not a Democracy.

You never hear our country referred to as a Republic anymore. Neither do we have a limited government. Now we have a democracy, with “rights” residing in whatever group can claim the greatest victimhood and special needs, and politicians using ever more of the people’s money to spend buying votes back home.
