Collectible Elsewhere
Theo introduces us to his pal: The Remittance Man.*
Colonial holdout in deepest, darkest Africa. Quick scan reveals thoughtful discussion of the issues of the day and military matters, a keen interest in sport and vintage poppy, and an appreciation for other gentlemanly pursuits.
* For those not familiar with this fine British tradition, remittance men were black sheep, second sons, ne’er-do-wells in well-to-do families who were granted allowances, payable elsewhere. In this day and age when anything goes, the practice has fallen into disuse. Family lore has it that one of my maternal great-great-grandfathers, born to a mill-owning Anglo-Irish family in Belfast, was so blessed, and travelled to America to draw his checks there prior to shifting operations to Australia. Sadly, whatever incident or incidents may have compelled his departure lost to the ages.
