Window Ghosts

And other tales of rampaging elephants, erupting volcanos and ex-wives at the Jungle Trader.  Put on your pith helmet and hack your way through the underbrush into this world of strange and exotic wonders.  Be watchful, sleep with one eye open. You may not be young or male enough to have to worry about the window ghosts of old Siam. But they have other kinds. Many, many other kinds:

A young Thai man screamed and died in his sleep.

“A window ghost probably killed the man,” a Thai trader told me after he had heard the news. “Window ghosts steal the souls of young men during their sleep. The victims scream and die.”

I thought for a moment. “A window ghost enters a house through a window, I presume?”

He nodded. “Yes.”

“You mentioned men. What about women?”

“The ghosts never attack women,” the trader said. “To avoid death, some Thai men wear lipstick to bed. A man who wears lipstick or fingernail polish to bed hopes to trick window ghosts into believing he is a woman and not a man.”

I make a daily trek to visit the Jungle Trader. Makes me glad to be where I don’t have to worry about rampaging elephants, villagers outraged over perceived witchcraft, man-eating tigers, vicious spells hanging over me, etc.

It’s a dangerous world out there, folks.

WTH? Even a man of viking blood needs to pick his fights carefully? (In the story about his ex-wife) ROTFLMAO!
