Smart Is As Smart Does
Iran develops 2,000 lb smart bomb:
Iran has developed a 2,000-pound (900 kg) “smart bomb”, official media quoted a Defense Ministry statement as saying on Wednesday, in the latest announcement from Tehran about progress regarding military hardware.
The guided bomb, named Qased (Messenger), was developed by specialists within the ministry and is now operational, IRNA news agency said, adding it could be dropped from F-4 and F-5 jets.
Yeah, maybe. But if they’re smart, they’ll keep it in the hangar. At least for the next 17 months.

Every time Iran boasts of it’s munitions, this Ordnance Corps officer cannot help but chuckle…

The danger is not whether any other military has our level of sophisticated technology. If you have no stomach to use the most advanced weapons in the world, in the end all you’ve done is waste treasure and men on its development, irreplaceable men and treasure. War doesn’t bring wealth; contrary to popular myths that never look beyond the makers of war material. Everything about war is destructive.
The enemy doesn’t need much in the way of arms. It relies on our own ideas to slow bleed us, from multiculturalism and PC locks on the questioning mind, to the information technology it relies on to spread propaganda among its own.
It is always a mistake to underestimate the enemy. Arrogance and complacency has proven deadly to more than one civilization.

Dave S over at Tim Blair’s place speculated that an Iranian “smart bomb” was a suicide bomber who can count to 11 with his shoes on.
Heh!
Seriously, saltydog is correct. A man with a sword can kill a man with a rifle easily enough: all that needs happen is that the rifleman doesn’t shoot. Wars are fought with weapons, but won through the will of the people holding the weapons.
Also, I wonder how much of this is simply posturing by Iran. They probably have developed at least a first generation smart bomb (no great trick these days, with GPS technology so readily available). On the other hand, they have to be able to deliver it. While an F4 or F5 could do that, the Iranians would have to first enter Iraqi airspace (assuming that there is good radar coverage over Iraq….a very reasonable assumption, methinks), fly to the target, and deal with experienced American pilots all along the way.
Possible, but not certain. I’d put money on the Iranian augering into the ground before dropping his ordnance, myself.

I think this, like Iran’s missiles, is mainly aimed at Iran’s neighbours. The article says “Iran has threatened to hit back at US regional interests if attacked” and Iran has made many threatening moves towards the various gulf states. The USAF can thoroughly defend anywhere they’re based, but Kuwait in 1991 showed that the local states’ air defences are unreliable, to say the least. Saudi Arabia would probably do reasonably once prepared - say after the first couple of days. A few 2000lb bombs dropped on the gulf refineries and oil terminals would be noticed, and I think Iran’s neighbours would fear this.

Claims of Iran’s “Modern Weaponry” should be taken with a serious grain of Salt.
The Iranian News Agency had pictures of Irans latest “Modern Fighter Jet”.
Funny how it was painted identically to a USAF Thunderbird.
On their last “Armed Forces Day” they paraded what was supposed their latest state of the art cruise missle..
The only problem was that it was on a cheap pine cradle tied down with bungie cords. A weapon that has a fueled and armed weight of 2,000 pounds, worth beaucoup bucks would not be on a wooden cradle tied down with bungie cords.
What they do have is 16 Airbus A-300’s (120,000lb payload) which will make a hell of a bang if packed with explosives rather than passengers.

In any case, unless the smarter ones among them are buying Ahmadinutjob’s fairy tales about the twelfth imam, they have to think about the repercussions from dropping said bomb.

But Ahmamadman has stated explicitly that it would be worth losing Persian thousands by retaliatory nukes if they could take out Israel. It is wise to remember that many, not all, but enough of the population do not think of their life on this earth as a value, except as a pathway to the next world–and they are assured of paradise if they take out the Jews and/or other heretics along the way.
