Fidel Castro Currently in a Francisco Franco Holding Pattern
“Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead,” went the running gag on Saturday Night Live for months in 1975/76. We seem to be in for a, hopefully, brief replay of that gag with today’s tsunami of rumors that Fidel and Che have been reunited at last.
Rumors of Castro’s death may or may not be premature. It is, after all, something that has been a staple of the Cuban rumor mill for years.
Still, we’d be remiss if we didn’t point you to one of the best blog sources for “Castro’s Outta Here” rumors, Val Prieto’s Babalu Blog where he’s tracking the story as “BREAKING: FIDEL CASTRO IS DEAD.”
UPDATE: “So once again - this must be like the millionth time - we were duped into the fidel castro is dead thing. But were we, really?” asks Val Prieto.
Lee @ Postpolitical sees an advantage in being undead: “If [the Cuban people] were to accept the corpse ruler, communism in Cuba could last for a thousand years, because a dead man cannot die.” (Via Fausta)
Cue eerie music and “Old Castro” from the Cult of Cthulhu: “That is not dead which can eternal lie…”

Personally, I think the old bastiche died a long time ago, and the Cuban Government paid Disney to build an animatronic likeness that they trot out periodically to prove he’s still alive. Or maybe Fidelito was always a little bit like a robot.

Can’t die too soon for me.
