To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death…let’s bring back landmines….

…not the old drop and forget kind that are a lasting menace to civilians, but new and improved ’smart’ landmines.

There are certain border areas in the world where our enemies are allowed to move with impugnity, by deploying air dropped anti-personnel mines we can prevent their movement and put them on the back foot. These mines need to have  a timed self-detonating mechanism that will destroy them after a set period, be it 12 hours, 1 week or even 30 days. They should also be capable of being remotely detonated by friendly forces should they or civilians be in the vicinity.

We need to cut off the ingress routes of the Taleban and Al Queda from such countries as Pakistan, Iran and Syria. Not knowing where they can move from day to day will seriously denegrate their effectiveness. Smart landmines allow us this capability.

And before anyone calls me a complete nutter, I know this is contraversial but we need to win this war by whatever means necessary. In my book an IED is a landmine with a media friendly acronym, and if the enemy get to use them then so should we.

The liberals will wet themselves and go into a right tizzy, but they always do. We have two choices win or start studying the Koran! Your choice!!

As for Princess diana: Her heart was in the right place if not her mind. Landmines are evil but 9/11 changed the rules. Now there are no rules!

Actually, the US has had “smart” landmines for a long time. The problem with land mines has been those deployed by non-US forces such as, the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, where they literally went nuts deploying unregistered mine fields. Or guerilla forces in other parts of the world. Those are the ones that cause unnecessary civilian casualties.

However, those are older designs, and look to be somewhat limited against our current enemy (FASCAM was originally designed in response to the Soviet threat in Europe). I’d like to see land mines incorporating more recent technology.

But the concept is well proven. As are IEDs, by the way. Way back when, we called them “command detonated mines”. But that’s not good enough for the MSM, possibly because of that non-PC term, “mines”.

As for Princess Diana, I think she was the nutter, Theo. She would have done better to advocate improving mine detection and removal technology, instead of willy nilly declaring all land mines “evil”, and trying to get them banned. She would really have saved lives that way. Countermeasures are more effective than one might think.

Land mines are like firearms, they are not evil by themselves. The people who deploy them without regard are evil.

The Chinese are another huge distributor of land mines. Millions of the boogers were given to the Red People of Cambodia to use as they desired. The commie rat bastages would often plant them in among fields and along paths frequented by folk and then demand they pay a removal tax to get rid of them. Take the tax and still leave the mines, as a “warning” to what will happen if they don’t behave.

The border between Cambodia and Thailand was so heavily and haphazardly carpeted with mines that the Reds wouldn’t even patrol within miles of the place for fear of running into mines set by their “brothers”.

Interesting. One wonders what Lady Di would have made of intelligent mines - I can see her now, doing the tour of world troublespots and whipping one out of her Kelly handbag with a flourish and saying “now having said all that, this little beauty I can live with”

Can I order 9 [nine] please. 4 to go to Calais, 3 to Dunkerque, 1 to Ostend and the remaining one to Boulogne-sur-mer. All in the best possible taste you understand! No? Bullshine!!
