Kind of has a ring to it, don’t you think? It’s part of the latest embarrassingly bad commentary from the drama-addicted, accuracy-challenged Keith Olbermann. He’s engaged in a bit of a kindergarten project with bluntnose scissors and Elmer’s glue. He starts with someone else’s arts and crafts project, the following chop job graph from the NYT:

Mr. Bush told the author, Robert Draper, in a later session, “I’m playing for October-November.” That is when he hopes the Iraq troop increase will finally show enough results to help him achieve the central goal of his remaining time in office: “To get us in a position where the presidential candidates will be comfortable about sustaining a presence,” and, he said later, “stay longer.”
And cites Bush’s latest statement, at al-Asad, that continued progress may lead to a troop reduction:
The president told reporters, “They (General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker) tell me if the kind of success we are now seeing continues, it will be possible to maintain the same level of security with fewer American forces.”
So that he may dramatically proclaim a gotcha:
Everything you said about Iraq yesterday, and everything you will say, is a deception, for the purpose of this one cynical, unacceptable, brutal goal: perpetuating this war indefinitely.
War today, war tomorrow, war forever!
And you are playing at it! Playing!
A man with any self respect, having inadvertently revealed such an evil secret, would have already resigned and fled the country! You have no remaining credibility about Iraq.
Olbermann has advanced quickly from kindergarten cut-and-paste to full-blown alienated adolescent fantasy fiction. I like that “War today, war tomorrow, war forever!” Very nihilistic. Very Klingonesque. Very Nazi-evocative, which of course is the idea.
Olbermann is making a serious political argument, however, so it is wrong for me to mock him. Someone just needs to explain to him, this is how it works: If surrender-happy Congress can be prevented from pulling the plug, and progress can continue in the counter-insurgency, and weathervane presidential candidates can be convinced it will be politically viable in 2008 to commit themselves to the future genocide-free stability of Iraq and the greater Middle East, then, eventually, troop levels can be reduced. The “playing” part, Keith, is a figure of speech.

Mr. Bush, our presence in Iraq must end. Even if it means your resignation. Even if it means your impeachment. Even if it means a different Republican to serve out your term. Even if it means a Democratic Congress and those true patriots among the Republicans standing up and denying you another penny for Iraq, other than for the safety and the safe conduct home of our troops.
This country cannot run the risk of what you can still do to this country in the next 500 days.
Not while you are playing.
Olbermann’s a little out front of the herd on that. The other cowboys reined in when they saw the cliff and are trying to turn the livestock. The Dems don’t want to impeach. They know they couldn’t pull it off if they did. They haven’t managed to cut off funds. They haven’t, now that I think of it, managed a damn thing except a watered down non-binding resolution in one house. The Dems, in fact, are starting to figure out that Bush is right. Bush is right. The way out is winning. They don’t much like it. It’s a big problem for them.
Note to self: Examine this man’s career for clues about how he managed to land himself a prime national slot. Could make fascinating case study of TV vapidity. Check for any indication that he is a man of faith, who might humbly kneel each night and thank God most fervently for television, where they have an even greater tolerance for fools and frauds than they do in print. TV, where the sound of one’s voice, the tone and rhythm of one’s words, delivered with sufficient fire in the eye and lantern jaw, can make what is actually said blissfully irrelevant!
