Lonely? Gene Conspiracy.
A study of 22,000 genes has singled out 209 of the loneliest genes in the world. So to speak. Suspiciously, genes seem to have conspired against the lonely.
Article indicates its unclear which came first. Loneliness or immune system dysfunction. Loneliness-gene link sound to me like it could be the mother of all chicken-end-egg questions.
Hawks, to whom I owe this insight and to whom I defer on all blogogenetic issues, observes:
I guess if the genes are there responding to loneliness with greater inflammatory responses, you could call that a conspiracy. They seem likely to link to social hierarchy, with the sort of relationships studied by Robert Sapolsky in baboons.
