Ardolino has a chat with a Fallujan mukhtar. Here’s there good news:
Mukhtar: The people of Fallujah, now they know the truth of the terrorists, the mujahadeen. Now they know that these people are not working for Fallujah; no, they are working against the people here. So they’ve changed their minds, all of their thinking about the terrorists. Fallujah was a city of peace for a long time. It’s the “city of mosques” and all the people are peaceful, hard workers.
INDC: Why was there so much conflict with the Americans initially?
Mukhtar: We thought America wanted to steal Iraq. And from our perspective as Muslims, you should fight against thieves. And all the people around the world … it’s the same in America … if Iraq went to America to take America, all the people would fight against Iraq. I think we can agree about that.
INDC: What do you think of Americans now?
Mukhtar: The Americans now are peaceful — more than us (laughs). They are helpful and give humanitarian support for the people here.
Here’s the bad news:
INDC: What do you think of the national Iraqi government now?
Mukhtar: I do not believe in this government, and 90 percent of the Iraqi people are just like me.
INDC: Many people who analyze Iraq are worried about whether the government will reconcile with the people of Anbar. What do you think the chances for that are?
Mukhtar: No comment.
Security, military progress and economic development are moving ahead. Political progress, no great surprise, lags. In part due to old suspicions and grudges, in part due to evidence nothing has changed at the top. Whether that continues to be the case, and how long the Iraqi people intend to tolerate an unresponsive government, remains to be seen.

Now the other good news.
Jules: How the hell’s it going Mike H.
Mike H.: Howdy Jules, am I glad to be part of Bob’s ten percent. I was part of the ten percent when I was in the Navy and Marine Corps. What a joy it is to be on the other side of Bob but there’s one problem. That’s the ten percent times five that voted along with me at the last presidential election. There seems to be a disconnect between Bob’s figures and the facts. The Demoncrat majority in congress is because of those on my side that didn’t vote during the most recent election Bob. So I think that you need to adjust your stats just a bit.

Errata: ‘majority in congress is *there* because’

Ha! I just love those who come here spouting their poll numbers. Makes a body wonder if the left ever ever ever has an independent thought. Do they dare? What if (gasp) a poll came out that they disagreed with!?
I don’t blame the Iraqis for not trusting this government. Aside from the historic problems among the different tribes and sects, which is problem enough, Congress has not given them any reason to think that it isn’t in their best interest to behave in the traditional manner. If we aren’t going to stick around, why shouldn’t they make the best deals they can? They are typical politicians. Unfortunately, so are ours.
