Perfected
First they came to perfect the Communists,
but I figured the communists could use it, so I did not speak out.
Then they came to perfect the Socialists and the Trade Unionists,
and seeing how much time those guys spent trying to perfect everyone else, I figured they deserved each other.
Then they came to perfect the Jews,
and I thought, you know, my buddies Mashberg and Jenny and Arthur and Frank and Robin and Franci and Garfo aren’t exactly perfect. Especially Mashberg. Nor are my cousins David and Dani, though close. But I thought, “That skinny scary-looking skank is nuts.”
And then they came to perfect me. They’re still working on it. Big job. It’ll take a while.
Seriously, though, there’s a couple of ways of taking this latest Coulter thing.
Richard Prior, Chris Rock type shock humor, only WASP on Jew instead of Black on White. Edgy. Even edgier because WASPs aren’t supposed to do that anyone else, they’re just supposed to take it. Or, a maybe slightly more modern, tolerant variety of medieval Jew-burning Christianity. Over the edgy. I dunno, I think her shtick has been a little ridiculous for a while, maybe because in the end its less about what she’s saying no matter how shocking than just about her, which needs to be looked at all the time, like she’s a human miniskirt.

Ann Coulter is nuts. And mean. And she needs to stop purging after every meal.

COULTER: “Yeah. You have to obey.”
She said this several times and it gave me the creeps. That, and the rest of that bit of medievalism, sounded no different than that coming out of Islam. Obey. Submit. Tomato. Tomatah.
Her arrogance extends beyond Jews, Muslims, various assorted atheists (atheism says nothing about what a person believes, only what they do not believe), et al, to other Christians who may not believe quite the way those at the Mega-churches do.

Hey salty dog, don’t you think there’s a difference between having an opinion that someone else should be “perfected” in the way you prefer and believing you have the right to either kill, enslave or dhimmify them if they won’t, the way Muslims do?
I think everyone should be an Oakland Raiders fan, but I mostly draw the line at cutting throats when they disagree.

Of course there is a difference–now. It was only a few hundred years ago that Christianity fought amonst themselves just as the Muslims are doing, and torturing and murdering apostates and other unbelievers. They also regularly did wrong by the Jews, who were as much a scapegoat for Christians as Muslims (and still are for many). And the Christian community has its nutters right here in America. The KKK, to name the worst, was and is an avowed Christian group, and uses it as a premise for their foul doings.
Before you yell at me that no decent Christian would have anything to do with the nutters, believe me I know. My point is that just because it is that way right now doesn’t mean that it can’t or won’t change. Coulter doesn’t separate her religion from her politics, and neither do too many others–nor do they see any reason to do so. I would defend her right to believe and say anything she pleases. Frankly, I prefer to know who the people are who think that their faith trumps my right as an individual to my life, the liberty to live it, the right to all property I manage to acquire, and the pursuit of my own happiness. None of that infringes on any other’s right to the same. But when those who use their faith try to dictate what constitutes science based on their faith, for instance, I draw the line, whether they be Christians, Muslims, or environmentalists.
To those who defend her by pointing out that she says some things that need saying, I can only regret that this crude, vain, publicity-seeking woman is the only one speaking up. It doesn’t say much for our side.

AHippler:
“I think everyone should be an Oakland Raiders fan, but I mostly draw the line at cutting throats when they disagree.”
Then you’re not a serious fan. Now, lemme talk to you about my Pats… and no, that’s not a knife in my pocket. Im just really glad to see you.
Seriously though, about that Coulter. The time for wasting energy in trying to convince folk to one side or the other in the cultural war is long past. As both sides start gearing up for the inevitable, words are going to get harsher and harsher and silly crap is going to get blathered out in the mix.
The rage builds and eventually it will break. Coulter’s time has past. She’s had some interesting things to say in the past but firebrands and arguers are no longer relevant. We’re past that point and into digging the trenchlines and shoring up reserves.

I love it when someone expresses the mainstream views of most faiths, and everyone jumps on them as being troglodytically prejudiced. Well… YEAH! If you believe that the supreme being of all creation plans to save you for following a pretty narrow set of doctrines, and has washed his hands in disgust at all other beings who believe anything else (and may plan to torture them for all eternity as a consequence), then that IS pretty atavistic and bigoted. It’s also at the core of most religions– believe what we believe or suffer forever. It’s a tribute to how people in the West have gotten pretty civilized overall that they manage to call themselves by some religion’s name while setting aside the logical end results of that faith’s traditional tenets (that my neighbors the Goldbergs will suffer the agonies far surpassing the Holocaust for all eternity at the hands of a just and loving God), and cherry-pick the parts that seem middle-class respectable and charitable and decent.

I’m not entirely sure where AHippler is coming from in his original comment. Wasn’t Ann Coulter the one who said our response to the atrocities of September 11, 2001 ought to have been “invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity”? That does sound rather similar to “believing you have a right to kill or enslave them.” I agree with salty that Coulter’s comments sound eerily similar to those who call for submission to Islam. Too close for comfort.
(Just to be clear, I agree with the part about invading the countries that need invading and killing the murderous tyrants who need killing, but I have a big problem with doing so in the name of Christianity. The military actions the US is engaged in are being made on behalf of humanity, for the purpose of defending and extending the free world.)

Many Jews who have converted to Christianity (Messianic Jews) - especially the ‘born again’ variety, do consider themselves “perfected Jews”. They keep true to the Talmud and Torah laws, the difference is they believe Jesus to be the Messiah prophesised. Not that I am condoning her little interview, just saying that’s all.

as I have noted at Roger Simon’s place: why aren’t the Jews producing missionaries? I’ll bet a LOT of people would go to synagogue, if they thought they weren’t going to be shunned by the members of that synagogue.
Also, whatever you may want to think, this ‘civilization’ we are living in, this world of wealth and energy, is a Judao-Christian world. NOT an Islamic world. The Third World, with its poverty and misery, is primarily an Islamic world. I agree with Grimmy. It is long past time for being polite about all this.
