Science Settled
Says old geezer who’s been around a while. Prominent meteorologist on Gore, Nobel:
ONE of the world’s foremost meteorologists has called the theory that helped Al Gore share the Nobel Peace Prize “ridiculous” and the product of “people who don’t understand how the atmosphere works”.
Dr William Gray, a pioneer in the science of seasonal hurricane forecasts, told a packed lecture hall at the University of North Carolina that humans were not responsible for the warming of the earth.
His comments came on the same day that the Nobel committee honoured Mr Gore for his work in support of the link between humans and global warming.
“We’re brainwashing our children,” said Dr Gray, 78, a long-time professor at Colorado State University. “They’re going to the Gore movie [An Inconvenient Truth] and being fed all this. It’s ridiculous.”
… Dr Gray, whose annual forecasts of the number of tropical storms and hurricanes are widely publicised, said a natural cycle of ocean water temperatures - related to the amount of salt in ocean water - was responsible for the global warming that he acknowledges has taken place.
However, he said, that same cycle meant a period of cooling would begin soon and last for several years.
“We’ll look back on all of this in 10 or 15 years and realise how foolish it was,” Dr Gray said.
During his speech to a crowd of about 300 that included meteorology students and a host of professional meteorologists, Dr Gray also said those who had linked global warming to the increased number of hurricanes in recent years were in error.
He cited statistics showing there were 101 hurricanes from 1900 to 1949, in a period of cooler global temperatures, compared to 83 from 1957 to 2006 when the earth warmed.
“The human impact on the atmosphere is simply too small to have a major effect on global temperatures,” Dr Gray said.
He said his beliefs had made him an outsider in popular science.
“It bothers me that my fellow scientists are not speaking out against something they know is wrong,” he said. “But they also know that they’d never get any grants if they spoke out. I don’t care about grants.”
Nothing like an old crank.

Old geezers. Gotta love ‘em, ’cause they tell it like it is.

I’m surprised there’s not a mob of angry Democrats outside this poor guy’s house armed with scythes and pitchforks preparing to burn this heretic at the stake.

I’d just love to hit the Goracle with this one. “How do you explain this trend?”
October 16th, 2007 at 12:19 pm
Steve, you have hit on the problem with the Goracle. He can’t explain the trend and you will never see him explain one. His credentials are not based on his analytical and research skills. Those who believe his ‘analysis’ choose to believe it solely because he is Al Gore. Would anyone believe that someone is a doctor simply because they are wearing a lab coat? Some people believe him simply because he is Al Gore.
He does NOT have the credentials to speak the science, he is simply an executive spouting out the mantra of what some environmental group has fed him. Subsequently, those without the desire or capability to think and analyze information in a non-biased manner spout off the same.

fishon, Gore is not even an executive, at least not in the sense that he has any executive ability. He’s a politician, by and large, although he has branched off into religion of late.

Exactly, JeffS - Marjoe Gortner wins the Nobel…

One of the biggest outrages in this cauldron of outrages is what it is doing to science and scientists. It shows up the real dangers of having the government in charge, the result of which is that we now have no more major independent R&D labs. Where are scientists to go, except to the universities, and other labs run by the government permission and grants. Seeing what is happening ought to be a warning to the very real dangers to life and liberty when government bureaucrats are determining what scientists may–and may not–do.

The Gore followers are convinced that they’re right, and even if they’re not right, we’d be better off doing something “just in case.”
It’s a brainwashing thing. And those folks seem to need a cause to believe in. Yet, I bet many of them drive SUVs and don’t walk their own talk.

JeffS, I agree. He isn’t an executive in the truest sense of the word. He functions at an executive level instead of say a professer or engineer level.

A junior executive. At the most.

It is a cautionary tale, what happens in areas of human endeavor when government comes to control the purse strings.
Scientific types seeking grant money had sure better reach the “right” conclusions if they don’t want the spigot to dry up.
And this phenomenon isn’t just science, education as well and just about anything you can think of.
We’ve done this to ourselves in both consigning more powers to government and seeking government oversight and regulation (as opposed to self regulation) in more and more areas of human endeavor.
Jabba The Hutt has been happy to oblige.
