Osama Lied
“I advise myself, Muslims in general and brothers in al-Qaida everywhere to avoid extremism among men and groups,” he said, saying leaders should not build themselves up as the sole authority, and that instead mujahedeen should follow “what God and his prophet have said.”
It’s a pretty big day, when Osama not only admits he’s losing, but that he’s full of it.
In the audiotape broadcast on Al-Jazeera television, bin Laden said insurgents should admit “mistakes” and that he even advises himself not to be extreme in his leadership.
…
“Some of you have been lax in one duty, which is to unite your ranks,” bin Laden said in the audiotape. “Beware of division … Muslims are waiting for you to gather under a single banner to champion righteousness. Be keen to oblige with this duty.”
I guess he isn’t including those apostate Shiites whose shrine his guys blew up twice, kicking off the big sectarian murderfest. But he’s starting to sound a little like Bush a couple of years ago.
Here’s a thought. Stop killing people. Try doing something useful. In the case of bin Laden himself, one last suicide bomb … in the cave, with several dozen or so of your closest pals … would be fine. But unfortunately, it wouldn’t appear any of this means a lightbulb has been flicked on in said Waziri cave. It just means he’s losing, and he’s admitted it. Cause enough for celebration. It couldn’t come at a better time, when Bush is coming back to Congress for more money to prosecute this war against unmitigated evil. Even the AP has had to make some Anbar Awakening/deaths down boilerplate part of its daily offering, that’s how dire the situation has gotten in Iraq for the surrender camp.
Strangely, the AP in this version of the bin Laden blabberfest omits any admission of personal failings, just has Osama exhorting the troops. However, it does include the delightful news that the U.S and the Sunni tribes intend to rub it in his face:
To showcase the success of that tribal alliance, the U.S. military planned what it called a “unification parade” in Ramadi, the Anbar provincial capital, on Tuesday.

In yesterday’s video (actually a fixed picture with a voiceover) Osama’s beard was back to scraggly gray.
What happened to the brown healthy one, you know, Islam allows the (vain) dyeing of the beard in preparation for battle or something ?
I guess the point of yesterday’s tape was that in furtherance of the ummah you’re not an Iraqi or an Indonesian or any specific nationality, but think of yourself as Muslim. Which dovetails with the message from radical mosques, you don’t belong to this country (e.g., Great Britain) but to the larger worldwide Muslim community.
Osama’s entreaties for this or that are sounding a little desperate these days.
Over time, as in Iraq, any agenda requiring mass slaughter is going to become, necessarily, unpopular with normal human beings.
