Give a person a prize, and suddenly they think their words are sacrosanct.
Age can also bring on intimations of self -righteousness, see Jimmy Carter (of course, he’s had that problem for the duration), Nelson Mandela (yes, really) and, ta da, Doris Lessing. Age can also exacerbate looniness, see Robert Mugabe.
Of course, there are many other examples.
Lessing turned 88 yesterday.
I read her about 30 years ago, but her “works” are permanently off my list after those gratuitously dumb comments.

People keep making the mistake of thinking that just because a writer can tell an interesting story that person is blessed with superior knowledge or wisdom, when in fact that is not the case. In fact, good storytelling often is built on an ability to fake knowledge by skilfully dropping hints and allusions that give the appearance of reality while in fact only hinting at it. I have personally known a great many writers and they do not possess more knowledge or wisdom than the average person.
