Sad, but true.
Mush is in a predicament. Yield power to Benazir Bhutto, the Harvard-educated darling of the left and the media, and you either get old-time Pak corruption, or the Taliban overthrowing the Bhutto regime and it’s back to 2001 all over again. Seize power and establish martial law (which is precisely what this is, not “a state of emergency”), and you get the world worried that Mush gets overthrown, and the Taliban not only seizes power, but gets nuclear goodies to give to Al Qaeda/Iran/highest bidder, to toss at Israel and elsewhere AND it’s back to 2001 all over again.
If Mush had any common sense, he’d resign not just from the Army, but from the Presidency, lift martial law, and put someone who hasn’t been handpicked or part of the bad old days. That won’t happen in the short term, but if the Pakistanis are restive enough, it’ll happen nonetheless.
