Wedding plans will be announced, after the first of the year.

“A’jad thought bubble: “That pig of a Spanish king was right. Why doesn’t this infidel buffoon just shut up!””

Heh. The enemy of my enemy is my (temporary) friend.

Why is this so hard to understand? Some time ago, there were fools who asserted that there was no way al Qaeda would make common cause with the Iraqi Baathists, because the former were deeply religious and the latter were secular infidels: ideologically, they were simply incapable of coming together.

Guess they were ignorant of the pact signed by Nazi Germany (Ribbentrop) and Soviet Russia (Molotov) in 1939.

Even sworn, mortal enemies will become (temporary) allies when each believes it’s in its own best interests.

Another example is the alliance between the USSR and GB, US.

If we were really imperialists like in the good old days, we would have a brigade of Marines escort Chavez out of his county’s misery.

  5. saltydog Says:

If we were really imperialists these thugs would never have been allowed to reach the political positions they hold. Even if we had ignored their rise, they would have ample evidence to understand it would not be in their interest to challenge us.

The thing is that this is how it ought to be, imperialists or no. Self-defense, predicated on justified self-interest, is premise enough to keep the thugs of the world under their rocks where they belong.

  6. Dave Surls Says:

“the U.S. empire is coming down.”

We’ll be coming down to Venezuela like we came down to Grenada, if you don’t mind your manners.

“The rumors of our demise are greatly exaggerated… as you will soon learn to your sorrow.”

If the U.S. were as evil and imperialist as Chavez pretends to believe, then he would
never dare to fly across the Atlantic.

I think the reason why Bush is not acting on getting rid of the toxic Katzenjammer Kids right away is to see how far outside the funny farm they can get before he get to the Popeye “that’s all I can stanz, and I can’t stanz no more!” speech before he gets out the spinach.

Think of this scenario and tell me if it’s plausible.

Not only does US and Israel take out Iran’s nuke program with a quick flyover, a few JDAMs and bunker busters, but while the world watches Tehran’s dreams go up in smoke, a few ships suddenly show up at hugo chavez’ doorstep in the Caracas waterfront. Not just regular ships, mind you: warships stocked aplenty of bad-ass Navy Seals, Special Ops, and Marines (extra-salty, take-no-prisoners variant) with specific goals. Like, f’rinstance, doing a few oopsies with hugo’s oil and natural gas infrastructure, helping out a few of the locals juryrig a few Radio Free Venezeula, encouraging mass revolt and protests, and convincing hugo’s communique that if they want to continue drawing oxygen, they resign now or else those nice warships in their harbor will make Caracas one punch line the late shows won’t repeat.

The short term will see gas prices skyrocket well beyond $5 a gallon and oil to reach $150 a barrel. With judicious use of the Strategic Reserve, which the government has been quietly filling out of the eyes of a nosy media, those prices will be temporary. After the dust has settled, though, the markets will finally heave a sigh of relief (they always seem to do that after a crisis) and send gas back down to $2 per gallon or less, and finally have oil under $50 a barrel. Why? Our rivals, Saudi Arabia and OPEC will be so grateful for getting rid of these two pests that they’ll gladly throw open the spigots for us. Or is it that they’ll see that America is not so much imperialistic as we are damn serious about defending ourselves and we plan on doing so no matter what the rest of the elite and the 11%-approval-rating-Congress thinks of us?

If hugo and A’jad (and perhaps Khamenei and the rest of the mullahs, and maybe Robert Mugabe in a cameo snatch-and-grab) are still alive, the Hague awaits them to answer their crimes against humanity in their countries. Otherwise, the man with the three-pronged stick and a warm place will greet them, escort them to their working places, and force them to dig.

    Sorry for the long post.
