Iraq = Korea
Big news out of Iraq where, ignoring Congress and its withdrawal proposals in the interests of common sense, the Shiite-led Iraqi government and the Bush administration have inked a deal for an ongoing U.S. military presence and strategic partnership. To ward off foreign threats and internal coups, and keep a lid on sectraian rivalries. That’s interesting. As an earlier version of this AP article noted, it’s really going to tick off the Iranians.
One of the things I always liked about Bush. He always does exactly what he said he was going to do.
This sets up a logical strategic arrangement, addressing vital U.S. and Iraqi interests, that illustrates how ridiculous withdrawal proposals have been, as they concentrated on abandonment without regard for any internal or external consequences. Particularly the Murthite “over the horizon” proposals. I’d suggest 50,000 U.S. troops in bases would have to have significant combat capability if they were to be prepared to carry out any of the roles outlined above. Sounds almost … Korea-like. Maybe more like our 62-year arrangements with Germany and Japan. Watch and learn, as Iraq and the United States forge an opportunity not to repeat the wretched experience of Southeast Asia. Who wants that? Oh yeah, right.
Strangely, this updated version, which now includes the actual signing of the deal, omits the earlier version’s Iran and Syria references. But here’s the deal. Iran and Syria, both terrorism-supporting nations, have been providing aid and comfort to terrorists in Iraq has part of their long-running scheme to control the Middle East, which has included murderous ventures in Lebanon, Gaza and Afghanistan. It is in the long-term interest of the United States to maintain a strong military presence and alliances in this region, to prevent Baathist dictatorships and nuke-lusting Mahdist end-timers from taking over some of the richest oil reserves in the world. Much as it was in the interest of the United States to get nuke-lusting Baathist dictator Saddam out of there.
Here. This is what I’m talking about.
Those crazy mullahs aren’t that different from some other megalomaniacal nuke-lusting populace-enslaving belligerents I could name, who also have enjoyed violent incursions and hostage-taking episodes over the years.

I expected this outcome, because, having spent so much in treasure and precious lives to rescue and stabilize Iraq (and maintain our own safety), how could we do otherwise?
Oh. Wait. I forgot about Congress.
