Black like Barack
I think what Andrew Young, former top aide to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., is trying to tell us here is that we shouldn’t judge Obama by the color of his skin. Rather, we should judge Hillary by her man’s soul content.
It isn’t the first time we’ve heard a version of this argument re Obama.
Bizarre racial issues aside, this is a great journo learning moment, by the way. This is one of those inverted pyramid things. If it bleeds, it’s supposed to lede. Not clear to me why an AP scribbler and whoever was editing buried the lede with this white bread take on Young’s remarks.
First graph, boring, dry, wonkish … all the things Andrew Young is not. As evidenced by graph two, in which he “also quipped,” and graph three, in which he was “quick to follow.” It’s almost like AP is embarrassed that this former top aide to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is saying this and feels the need to hold it at arm’s length for us.
Riehl’s got your Black as Barack vid.

[...] Jules Crittenden noticed how AP backed into the lead in its story: “It’s almost like AP is embarrassed that this former top aide to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is saying this and feels the need to hold it at arm’s length for us.” [...]

“Bill is every bit as black as Barack.”
Which is to say not black at all?

So, just what is being black supposed to mean, exactly? Besides “not white.” That Obama isn’t steeped in the lowest of gangsta “culture?” Or that he doesn’t have slave ancestors? That would leave a lot of black Americans out, including Colin Powell. Course, even coming out of poverty, and having endured the worst of racism, Condi Rice isn’t black enough either. I’m having a hard time here. If Bill Clinton is “black enough,” but Obama isn’t, it seems to me that “being black enough” is defined in a strictly delimited way that really hasn’t much to do with skin color. Unless you’re “white,” which also seems to be a kind of floating abstraction.
See what happens when you limit and define your world as a kind of Heraclitian flux, using constantly changing slang as a basis for thought?

As far as I’m concerned, Andrew Young is merely the black Jimmy Carter when it comes to shooting his mouth off. Old age has robbed both of them of any sense or inhibition.

Jeez I’m sick of this.
Its like the Civil War never happened. The hundred year struggle for civil rights was an illusion. Schools, lunchcounters, restrooms and waterfountains never desegregated, some $4 trillion worth of wealth never transferred to a residual black underclass through altuistic social programs to help them get out of the underclass. None of it happened.
All flushed down the memory hole by some unscrupulous black people and their guilty white friends who have made and continue to make millions by keeping alive the illusion that black people must be permanent wards of the state. And if you dare ask why that must be, you get called the r-word if you’re white or an Uncle Tom if you’re black.
People like Andrew Young and Jimmy Carter for example. Shame on them, not that they will ever acknowledge it.
