AFP: Pak army captures 50.
WANA, Pakistan (AFP) — Pakistani troops captured 50 Islamist militants in an operation in the rugged tribal region near the Afghan border, a day after killing dozens of rebels in the area, the military said.
Troops also recovered 10 bodies of the rebels from Chaghmalai area of South Waziristan which was scene of a major clash on Friday in which an estimated 30 militants were killed, chief military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said.
“Security forces launched an operation in Chaghmalai area last night and captured 40 militants,” he told AFP.
“The village has been completely cleared of the militants,” he said.
Security forces also launched a search operation in Ladha town and arrested 10 militants including some of their local commanders, the spokesman said.
The clash in Chaghmalai erupted after militants ambushed a convoy of security forces with rockets and small arms. The military said an hour-long firefight in the area left 20 to 30 hardline fighters dead and four soldiers wounded.
Meanwhile, 70 wacked in retaking of the overrun fort. LA Times:
PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN — Pakistani authorities said they killed more than 70 Islamist militants in two separate clashes Friday and recaptured a fort in the largely lawless tribal region near the Afghan border.
At last 50 militants who had assembled to attack a fort in the town of Laddah were killed by barrages of mortar and artillery fire, officials said. Meanwhile, army troops took back the abandoned Sipla Toi fort in the South Waziristan tribal region, the sources said.
In another clash, at least 20 militants were killed when they tried to attack a convoy in the Chagmalai area, authorities said.
The number of deaths could not be independently confirmed.
Security forces carried out heavy shelling in an area dominated by the Mahsud tribe, forcing inhabitants to flee. Residents said heavy shelling rocked houses, killing two people, including a young girl.
That’s sad. I wonder if Mehsud’s people have figured out Mehsud is responsible for what is happening to them.
