Chumbayah

I’m pretty sure that’s how you’d spell that in Hebrew. Hard, throat-clearing “ch” sound. Check this out. They may dwell under the very rockets and suicide-bomb threat of Hamas, Hezbollah, etal, but Israeli lefties are every bit as clueless as their American counterparts. Jerusalem Post:

In a protest organized by a coalition of left-wing movements, over 1,000 people demonstrated at the Erez border crossing on Saturday in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the residents of Sderot, under the slogan: “Stop the siege on Gaza: A demonstration for Gaza and for Sderot.”

A convoy of about 100 private cars and 25 buses arrived at the crossing in the late morning hours and demonstrators chanted slogans against Israel’s siege of the Gaza Strip as well as in solidarity with the people of Sderot. A large number of army and police forces were present at the scene to maintain order, but the demonstration reportedly proceeded without incident.

A demonstration under the same slogan was being held by Gazans inside the Strip.

Speaking by phone to the demonstrators, Dr. Iyad al-Sarraj, head of the Palestinian Society for Psychological Research said: “We are joining hands today in the pursuit of peace, justice and security for all - security for Palestine, security for Israel, security for Gaza and security for Sderot.”

“Civilians on both sides are victims of the conflict and we deplore any action against [them],” Adam Keller, one of the organizers, said. “We call for an immediate ceasefire between Hamas and the Israeli government, which was proposed by Hamas several times, and we call for an immediate cease of Israeli incursions and Palestinian shootings.”

He neglects to mention that Hamas’ idea of a ceasefire is that Israel stop shooting back at Palestinian rocket launchers. Somebody needs to explain to them that the problem here is that Gaza was taken over by a terrorist group, which has been rocketing Sderot, hence the seige. Lifting the blockade on Gaza will make it easier for them to continue to do that, also to resume promised martyrdom, map-erasure operations vs. Israel.

BBC, while refering in somewhat admiring terms to Hamas’ “audacious act of defiance,” notes Egypt’s astonishing act of stupidity (my characterization, not Beeb’s) has put the nation of de Nile in a bit of a quandry:

Cairo now has two choices.

The first is to return with more troops and try again to close the border. That means not only significantly increasing its presence but also changing tactics. Egypt would have to match the force used by the Palestinians this time, meeting fire with fire.
It would be a high-risk strategy, running the risk of an armed clash with Hamas and even another withdrawal - either way it would be a public relations disaster for Cairo.

The other option is to sit down with Hamas, the militant Islamic group that runs Gaza. This is something Egypt has previously ruled out, but late on Friday the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is reported to have offered to broker talks between Hamas and Fatah, the party of the Palestinian president.

As long as the Gaza side of this border remains wide open, Hamas have in effect made themselves an indispensable part of this problem and its solution.

Egypt has sympathy for the Palestinians but it needs to regain control of its own territory and is under pressure to do so from Israel and Washington who fear an open border allows weapons to be easily taken into Gaza.

Would Option One be a public relations disaster for Cairo? Maybe not. Pretty much the entire Arab world has had it with Hamas. Here’s a third way. Leave the regular Pals alone for now. Let them have their Egyptian vacation. Tell them and the world they have been horribly victimized, now they are free. But they’d better get out of the way right now, so Hamas can be dealt with, and they’ll be even freer. Then start shooting Hamas gunmen. This is an illegitimate terrorist organization that engineered a hostile border incursion, among other misdeeds, after all. Coordinate with the Israelis, who can move in at the other end and start rocketing Hamas leadership.

LOL. There will never be peace until one side is destroyed, any more than there was peace between the Crusaders and the muslim states in the middle east or peace between the Spanish and the Moors.

The war goes on (for centuries if need be) until one side is utterly destroyed.

    Learn to deal.

“Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it”–Hamas Charter

Think you’re going to make peace with people who are committed to your destruction?

    Dream on.

You spelled it wrong Jules, it should be Chumpbaya.

Were these clowns born unable to reason logically or is that something you get from adopting leftist ideas?

If the Gazans want war Israel should give them war, more than they can stomach.

Except that they can’t, Michael. The first thing that will happen is hundreds of real or staged photos of civilian casualties; human shields are SOP. Then Bush and Condi will be on the phone telling Olmert that he can’t do that.

The only way to prosecute an effective war these days is to inflict massive damage quickly, before the press can get there to lie about what’s actually going on. This is why those NATO generals want to keep first use of nukes around.

This is so disingenuous. Wazzat, hudna ? “proposed by Hamas several times” after more than a few of their main guys were taken out inside Gaza in a retaliatory Israeli attack.

They hate to lose their main guys. Man on the street, women and children, no problem.

The Beeb…Israeli leftists…It’s as if someone keeps lobbing grenades into your backyard and your friends and neighbors keep telling you to lie back and enjoy it.
