I can see it now: Chavez triggers a call up of LATO forces by claiming incursions from Colombia (communication lines w rebel groups are handy in sooo many different ways) and Guyana. He proceeds to defend himself by imposing martial law on his neighbors. Nice, eh?

AP also fails to note that countries like Venezuela and Cuba have enough on their hands trying to put food on the table. Which may be the point of Chavez trying to stir up fear and anxiety about the Gringo Menace Up North.

Well, Rebecca, this trick has worked for North Korea since the 1950’s. Chavez isn’t any more above stealing ideas that work than food, oil, money, …….

Chavez’s little game has the additional benefit of making the oil markets a bit skitterish. Just a bit.
And pouring a few more petrodolloars into Chavez’s dunghill.

Oogoe’s likely ruining the Venezuelan economy, making life extremely difficult for producers, as another megalomaniac has done to Zimbabwe, Bobby Mugabe.
A little LATO whipped up as a diversion, while Oogoe’s goons (reportedly) seize food trucks to try to stem shortages.
Venezuela’s top food company has accused troops of illegally seizing more than 500 tonnes of food from its trucks as part of President Hugo Chavez’s campaign to stem shortages.

Why not leave a Chavez assassination and invasion on the table. Make the little porker sweat.
