Free Country
Huckabee vanity wagon rolls on, taking two of three. Looks like fun. Sunday morning pols roundup, plus a little Looney Tunes deep think:
And I’m sure this second-string governor, oddly perceived as the conservative in this race, is having a lot of it. Beyond the thrills of the moment, this is about the Huckster positioning himself for future advantage, whether a veep or Cabinet role, or the possibility of something going horribly wrong with McCain or his campaign. The former would be absurd, the latter a prelude to a Clinton or Obama administration.
Here’s Hucks at Newsweek on why he’s doing it.
It’s the democratic process playing itself out, as the con-cons continue to voice disgruntlement, liking Romney better than McCain in this unsurprising straw poll as well as Huckabee out in the cornfields and the swamps.
Free country, and a free election will play itself out. Contrast to the alternative. But the panicky Dems may have spoken too soon, may not be forced to jury-rig their monkey-wrenched election. Obama sweeps three, in addition to raising more $$$. Clinton camp in a “state of panic.”
Politico: Landslides could break deadlock. But either way, other questions are left unanswered. Exactly what would the Obama, Clinton admins do with Iraq? Hoagland at the Washington Post points out some impracticality in their planks.
ChiTrib: Demward poll swing could this year be matched by color shifts on the electoral map. I’d say that’s up to the voters, and the candidates.
Schoen at Washington Post: Restless and Anxious Moderates … have boosted Obama but could break McCainward. More moderation, please.
Meanwhile, Stuntz at the Weekly Standard, “Inconvenient Truths.” He makes some good points, though I think he’s dramatically oversimplifying the illegal border-crossing issue, which has yet to play itself out. As a political reality, it may become one of those flag-over-the-cliff issues for all sides, forcing compromise that could satisfy one or both sides to varying degrees or leave both unhappy. Unless one side manages to charge over the cliff first while the other side brakes and watches them go. So maybe cliffsmanship is going to emerge as the chief political tactic of our time. Not to be confused with brinksmanship, its geo-political cousin. Cliffsmanship being more of a Roadrunner vs. Wile E. Coyote game, brinksmanship more of a Bugs vs. Fudd thing. OK, it’s way too early Sunday morning.
Thanks to Memeorandum, Real Clear Politics and Warner Bros. for this morning’s quick political take.

Huckabee vanity wagon - I like that. This is exactly why I was hoping Romney would stay in until Huckabee dropped out.

The Hammer has the Huckster figured out: He is auditioning for a talk radio gig.
