Slams America. Too racist for a black president. Doris Lessing re President Obama, better he’s not elected, “They would murder him.”
If Barack Obama becomes the next US president he will surely be assassinated, British Nobel literature laureate Doris Lessing predicted in a newspaper interview published here Saturday.
Obama, who is vying to become the first black president in US history, “would certainly not last long, a black man in the position of president. They would murder him,” Lessing, 88, told the Dagens Nyheter daily.
Interesting. To prevent some presumed racist plot to assassinate the first black president, we should not have a first black president. I can think of plenty of reasons not to vote in Obama, but race and the possibility there may be a murderous wacko who’ll get past the Secret Service aren’t among them.
So far all the assassinated presidents have been white men, so I don’t supposed anyone’s immune. Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, JFK. Attempts have been made on every single president since FDR except Eisenhower, according to this list, so I don’t see what would make Obama special. They took shots at FDR, Ford and Reagan. Assassins attempted to storm Blair House while Turman was inside. Attempts were thwarted on Nixon, Carter, Clinton, Bush the elder and Bush the younger. Frankly, I’m surprised there haven’t been more attempts on Bush, given the level of vitriol. Anyway, it’s not clear to me how any of this is that old bat’s concern. Surely she’s got plenty of British racism to occupy her attention. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think Britain has even had a black candidate for prime minister. In fact, I’d be happy if someone can name the European country that has even entertained the notion of someone of non-European descent for any top post, where the local skinheads wouldn’t start rioting in the streets while the local burgermeisters go into a panic, if such an idea were floated.

Doris has made a career of being a couple of cans short of a sixpack, hence the Nobel Prize.

Well, Doris, Stalinist wack-jobs who abandon their children because raising children is such a bore don’t usually go at the top of MY sanity list.

From the context, Doris would be happy if her prediction came true.

Doris Lessing also said that she left her children because she would have become suicidal or an alcoholic if she were forced to raise them. It’s more likely her children would have been the ones with suicidal thoughts and alcoholism if she’d stayed, so maybe she did them a favor.
In any case, I’m not convinced she’s not an alcoholic, given her crazy, street-bum ramblings.

Why, when someone writes passably good novels which I did read some many decades ago…do their pronouncements at age 88 mean anything ?
Izzit the gravitas of the Nobel ?
Fame, even achievement, don’t go hand in hand with anything approaching correct analysis.
For the record, Lessing shares an opinion with a number of black southerners (especially women) who uttered similar fears for Barack’s future.
