Wasteland Desert
I could have told them that. But when Al Qaeda surveys the landscape in Iraq, and doesn’t like what it sees, it’s not talking about the sandy bits. It’s the AQ hearts and minds campaign, which has failed to flower no matter how much blood AQ waters it with.
Belated check in with the long silent Fadhil brothers at Iraq the Model: AQ in Iraq isn’t entirely out of friends.
Meanwhile, Gordon Alanko, aka Teflon Don at Acute Politics, has hit the ground. When they find out his history, they think he’s a “crazy nutter” and want a hit off whatever he’s smoking. Stay tuned.

Most of the foot soldiers for AQ in Iraq were Iraqi, and many were motivated by pay and power rather than religious zeal. I’m not surprised to see them deserting AQ and melting back into the general population, now that AQ is on the run. That leaves the foreigners and the few Iraqi die-hards to deal with, and the military is putting the squeeze on them as well, aided by better intelligence from Iraqi civilians.

“It’s the AQ hearts and minds campaign, which has failed to flower…”
Al Qaida is a little unclear on the concept. Putting a bullet through the heart and cutting off the head isn’t how those hearts and minds campaigns are supposed to be conducted.

The U.S. military showed videos they have captured of children being trained by al-Qaida in Iraq
I’m sure all the stateside yellers and screamers who (from their armchairs) self- righteously took the US military to task for events at Abu Ghraib…are equally outraged by this phenomenon.
